It's very simple. Dan and Tom, whatever "they" are can generate a lot of revenue from byond by hiring a few people who are really smart in DM and have nothing to do all day to teach people the DM language. Good idea? Nay? Yay?

I'm pretty sure it is a known thing that Tom and Dan are little short on cash. They had to cancel the whole they host our games for us thing because of Bandwidth problems. I might be off a little but yeah. Another thing, this community's majority is made up of 10 year old's who can't seem to have any money to spend. I also think this has been brought up before.
|
Why would this generate revenue?
Sure, I like the idea of this easy to learn and efficient language being taught, but I don't really see how that's going to increase their income. |
Well, I'd have to say this isn't the best decribed idea you've come up with.
The way you described it, Dan and Tom would LOSE money. The way you intended it, Dan and Tom would LOSE money. The way you thought it would work, they would obtain income. The way it would work, they would LOSE money. These people would have to be payed even if they weren't teaching anyone that week. Just being active and an employee means they would have to be payed if there weren't any customers. Plus, how often would these people be teaching people? They'd have to come up with lesson plans, and constantly figure out problems and workarounds. IF this method were to work, Dan and Tom could charge a 10% commission to anyone who had advertised their teaching services using their site, but I don't see this as bringing in any bacon, literal, or metaphorical. |

Oh ya, I forgot the people spending the money on using the tutors. Its an online class or something you know. I strayed from my computer and just finished what I could remember.

Why not manufacture a new BYOND blue book, and have people pre-order it? If the pre-orders aren't enough to cover the cost, then you just cancel it, otherwise, people send in the money when the cost can effectively be covered. Hell, I'd pay $39.95 for a good book that includes the BYOND reference, an index, and some good tutorials and submissions from BYONDScape...
Why not toss a CD full of demos and junk in the back of the book? I'm certain a lot of people in the community would be happy to donate even if they don't get any royalties for their work. The CD could include a big cache of free, unique icons constructed for temporary use until developers can make their own, and maybe all the tutorials and demos covered in the book. Maybe even a version of the old blue book and the reference on disk. I'd get a lot of use out of it. And maybe for those of us who want to spend an extra $10, maybe talk about getting a company that will manufacture BYOND logos for black shirts? Or just get some new BYOND themed stickers with witty phrases and quotes from the staff? I don't know about you, but I'd put a "No put usr in proc. Ungh." bumper sticker on the back of my car! And if the BYOND hoodies came in black, I'd be proud to wear one for myself. As it stands, I'm thinking about buying a BYOND coffee mug and some stickers to randomly graffitti all over the place, maybe attract some attention for the community. |

Well it is official..I hate this computer. I am at my aunts house using a laptop. It's screen is bad. it burns my eyes; my arm keeps on hitting a key and the key cursor thing jumps back so I start writing in the middle of a *Smacks keyboard* it just did it again.
Well what I am to get at..I had a whole thing typed out and the computer decided to get mad at me when I ever so lightly pressed the backspace button when my palm was on the cntl button making the page go back and erase >.>. Basically I was getting at the majority of the community are young, and the new programers are getting younger, and younger (Has anyone else noticed the flock of new programers). Also coming from someone who tries and help people out when ever he gets a chance, they seem to take advantage of me helping them, and expect me to do a whole system for them. I kindly not talk to them any more. I know that there are people on the forum that I go to when I am in need of help figuring something out, so i'm not trying to be a hypocrit or anything... By the way I would of posted this 2 hours ago if the damn comp didn't freeze, I watched a movie and came back and it unfroze. |

lol(The Laptop thing)
And my ACTUAL Reply: Yes, the new programmers are getting younger, but i'd say 3/4 of 'em start out, and quit before they make a good game out of either lack of patience or frustration. [EDIT] That is exactly why I failed with C++, so I went on to smaller, more limited languages. I had no patience with C++, I started out too big, trying to hack an Emulated Progamming Language made in C++ |

Why be bothered when all of that is on the website already, and is free? Do you really think people are gonna pay for something they already have access too? And why the hell would anyone want a BYOND sticker? |

Hey whats up folks?
I agree with ter13 here, the old blue book is neat, but it was writen for an older version of byond. I want a newer version of it, Im not afraid to pay my fair share either. The cd's full of stuff is a nifty idea as well. Wouldnt a green byond hoody be sweet too? yeah green... I'd love to have a "No put usr in proc. Ungh." bumper sticker for my truck that'd be too cool. Ohh, I bet that screwdrivers would be good in a byond mug, I should go get one when Im done with this. /*edit*/ They have 22oz stiens. how nifty is that. Ice cold alcohol in a big ole byond stien. ahh the benifets of age (21 as of last july, to bad my parents make me buy there booze now ::) /*that is all*/ have a nice day now. The mad crack fiend. |

I want to buy "BYOND Kick me signs" and put them on fellow school pupils backs!
How about sticking a "I own a Zeta rip" on someone's back for the ultimate insult? |
I'm not actually inclined to read the remainder of the posts in this thread in huge detail, but I actually do think your idea has a little merit.
If people were to pay a very low price of, say, $10 for a 2-hour tutoring session (in the tutor's free time, of course -- it'd be impossible to make good wages doing this, so it's not a quit-your-day-job sort of thing), and the tutors received a 50% slice of the income, I know that I would be more than happy to be a tutor. I'd be helping someone for a very small price... that's monetary as well as personal rewards. And if people wanted to hire themselves out as a tutor for multiple people over their week, they could actually earn some fairly decent supplemental income. $50 a week, for 14 hours of explaining something, meeting new people, and being helpful while doing it, is a great tradeoff. (Of course, this wouldn't be tax free income, since it's payment for a service. You'd have to report it on income tax and pay a portion of it to Uncle Sam.) But then, nothing's stopping anyone from simply offering a tutoring service outside of BYOND (though if you're an official tutor, you do get an element of credibility). |
