I was wondering, is it possible for BYOND to have MP3 songs playing in a BYOND game? If so, will it be added in next version? This would add a whole new meaning to most games, and even open a broader vision of new ideas. Atleast for me it would....

I think he meant to point you to the forum search, but somehow pasted a dictionary search link instead. Perhaps it was adjacent in his bookmarks list and he misclicked or something...
Anyway, the short answer is: No. The royalty fees are too expensive. For the long answer, use the forum search, this issue has been discussed dozens of times. On the bright side, once BYOND starts using the Fmod library, which has been "coming soon" for a little while now, we'll be able to use all sorts of nice sound formats; from OGG (a royalty-free MP3 replacement) to tracker formats like mod and s3m (similar in concept to MIDI, but you can define your own sound effects; so you get any sound you want as with MP3, but with minimal filesize as with MIDI). |

Okay, thank you. But um- I have seen these forum posts, but forgot what they said. The only reason I did not search for this topic is because it does not work for me. It brings me back to the beginning of the Developers Forums. No idea why. Also, I cannot edit my posts. I think I am the only one who has these problems....

What web browser are you using? Internet Explorer is a horrible browser, try a real browser.

Nope, but I thought about it. Linking to the forum search page or simply pointing to the forum search textbox in the upper right would be too easy. Instead I linked to a dictionary definition in hopes of putting the thought of looking for a search feature in his mind. I guess it couldn't penetrate the thick hull. :/ |

As Crispy said, Byond 4.0 will have this capability (using the OGG format), but if you're impatient, check out this post: [link] for another method. It's a bit unsafe though, because some people could lack the codec required to play the wav-file. /Gazoot |

I think the codec is widely available, but BYOND outsources the work to slow, little elves. Those on fast hardware might not notice it, but there can be noticable delays for those not so fortunate. Webcrawl suffers from this slightly and Wrangle And Warp had a version with compressed wavs which created unplayable lag.

The best solution right now would probably be to use really good MIDIs, but finding a good composer is tough... you have to know so much to squeeze the best out of midi. /Gazoot |

Just to clarify (and because I was focusing more on effects in my projects), pure background music could be fine because the pause would be somewhat rare. Specific event music/sound would not work on all computers because of the inability to accurately time it. If you can be sure that the music will be playing for quite a while and don't care about when it starts, I'd say to go with the compressed file.
