My current video card is very old its a NVIDIA GeForce2 MX. It is not fitting my needs. I have very little money and my parents will give little if any. I do not want to spend all my money cause video cards go out of fasion after almost a month after they come out. Any Ideas?

You can go up a GeForce generation or two for about $50 according to Pricewatch. (I have a TNT2.)

I realize TNT is worse than GeForce. I was just telling you that I'm in the same boat. I'd be happy with a GeForce 3 so I could play Guild Wars properly. My computer could not handle much more.
Anywho, good luck. =) |

The GeForce 2 MX and GeForce 4 MX are basically the same card. The latter has an extra something-or-other, I forget what exactly.
I don't recommend you get either of them. Increasingly, modern games simply will not run under those cards. And I don't mean that they'll just run slowly; they will actually pop up an error dialog and point-blank refuse to start up. I know for sure Thief: Deadly Shadows and Deus Ex: Invisible War do this, and also several others; game developers are completing rejecting the older cards and older versions of Windows, which I think is a terrible idea. Get a card with full DX9 shader support. (Don't just look at the bit that says "Compatible with DirectX 9.0"; all video cards are compatible with it. The question is whether they can use all of its features; full shader support is particularly important.) |

Like a Radeon 9600 :)
That's what I'm looking into, but it might be worth the money to just get the 9800... ~Kujila |

GF4 is a pretty solid buy, IMHO... all the PC's at school have those in 'em, and they run Halo PC pretty darn well! ^^;;

I am completely content with my Geforce 2 MX 100/200 card. Sure I don't play most new games on the highest video settings, but I don't even do that with old games. I don't see why people want the best looking games out there, as long as they can play them they should be fine. I run Half-Life 2 at about 40 - 50fps on mid-low settings. I can also run games like Doom 3 at about 25 - 35fps on mid-low settings, and thats extremely playable. However, if you want a new card, look at http://www.pricewatch.com, or http://www.newegg.com.

As Crispy explained, the model number doesn't mean a whole bunch. There are PCI Geforce 4 cards that are complete crap and won't run much of anything. Right now I'm running an old Geforce 4 Ti4200 until my better card is fixed. I'm able to run Half-life 2 at 75 frames on high settings(minus a few things). The rest of my parts probably make up for the card's loss, but I got it for $60 about two years ago..
Eek, newegg doesn't have much for that model anymore.. Cheapest Ti4200. Ugh, worth a try. |

I agree, but the problem is that many of the games I want to play refuse to run with a GeForce-anything-MX. I don't look forward to the day when I have to return the GeforceFX I'm borrowing. =P |
