from i-hacked.com (a November 21, 2004 article):
"What is Project DSLinux?: Nintendo will be releasing the "Nintendo DS" on November 21st, and then it is a foot race to see who can get linux running on this sweet device first. The guys over http://www.dslinux.org are looking for a few good hackers to help port Linux to the Nintendo DS system. This is a small yet quite capable device, which could put all PDA's to shame.

The system will have two processors, an ARM-9 CPU running at 67Mhz and a ARM-7 unit running at 33Mhz. Retail DS devices will have 4Mb of main RAM, with additional chunks of cache and shared RAM for the processors and 656kb of video RAM. This unit also comes with WiFi on board, along with two separate 3-inch TFT LCD displays at a resolution of 256x192. The lowermost display of the DS will be a touch screen, utilizing a stylus or the user's fingers. It also allegedly will have a 3D engine capable of drawing 120,000 polygons per second, implying a fill-rate of 30 million pixels per second. It is the first portable console from Nintendo (not including the Virtual Boy) to incorporate stereo speakers. Did I mention that it will have 10 hours of battery life!?

At a initial price of $149.99 this has strong potential as a cool little device. Dslinux.com has put up a bounty for hacking the Nintendo DS. $1000 to the first person who gets this device running linux, yup you heard that correctly."

Nice! I have a friend who already has a DS... he's not much of a hacker type, but I'm sure he'll be interested anyway. =)

i-hacked.com is a pretty nifty site. That's three cool things on it posted to this forum in the space of how many days? =)

I wont be trying to port Linux to my Nintendo DS, but that dosent make me any less excited, already people are trying to tunnel to Nintendo DS hardware.

Last week a guy dumped the first DS rom ever, the Metroid demo, and then, managed to flash it to a GBA flash card, run the orginal demo, put the GBA flash card in, pull out the orginal demo, and kept it running off the nintendo gba flash.

Whats that mean? The GBA slot can fuly access the DS hardware, making oodles of new emus! yay!
Sony PSP.

Actually, Sony wasn't expecting the DS to excel so much. The PSP has lower-end everything, graphics, processor, everything. Sony has already admitted the PSP won't live up to the hype as competition for the DS, they just weren't expecting the DS to work *that* well when it was released.

I am just curious where did you get that info on the ds's specs owning psp? Everything I have read has been the exact opposite (comparing specs) + looking at screens of PSP vs DS games, DS games looks much worse(very objective I know).

We already know that sony is allowing code execution off of the mem stick. its rumored right now that sony will allow 3rd party executables(homebrew) to launch. If thats true, I will jump on the psp like its the last chopper out of nam.

I don't know where you got your info, but you are wrong.

I don't remember the specs, but I believe the PSP has twin 333MHz CPUs with a 133MHz GPU and 32MB of main RAM. The UMDs also hold about 1.5GB of data.

Now, the DS, clocks in with it's ARM9 and ARM7 processor at a whopping 67MHz and 33MHz with 4MB of main RAM awesomeness. The flash cards it uses for games hold 128MB of data.

Now, i'm no math expert, but I can see the difference.

Edit: I'm no fanboy, I probably won't be owning a PSP or a NDS. So I don't want to hear any flaming in my direction.

Those numbers are pretty large, maybe if someone knew an information sight for the Sony platform one?

I didn't bite. I'm so proud. ;)
Hmm, I remember reading that a while back. I would try it, but I cant import a DS at the moment >_<

Well I hope Sony learned their valuable lesson: stick to what they're good at. Nintendo has been dominating the hand-held gaming for years and years ... countless foes have tried to claim the throne for themselves ... but led to their ultimate demise (Sega Game Gear).

This is so stupid, this thread was ment to be about the Nintendo DS and the Linux project. I think I have been the only other person so far to even mention Linux or development in the same thread.

This thread has just been jacked' by fan boys and idiots.

Fair enough. 3rd party console development has always been interesting to me and getting linux to run on a console is up there in the coolness table. On the other hand the dslinux team has a LONG way to go. If they actually go through with it and get a linux port.. AND manage to load it onto a system then that will be awsome. Thanks for the info on the first rom dump/gba slot specs.
