Anyone who likes the Civilization games should probably check out FreeCiv(http://www.freeciv.org/index.php/Freeciv). It's an open source Civ2 clone that works on a bunch of OSes. Works with up to 30 players. Would be fun to set up a nice large game sometime :).
count me in! i've been playing the linux version for ages, but i need fresh meat- er, players, to play against!

I'm in.
I used to play the original version of civ way back in the day. It was a load of fun. I hated the wonder system, though. I was, to be honest, distracted from it when warcraft came out. Maybe someday.
I could never stand Civilization played against human opponents -- I roleplay and am content to keep a well-managed empire which only reacts to hostilities if it needs to. Civilization isn't conducive to roleplaying and empire management; it lends itself to conquest.

If Leftley ever makes a new version of CGSG with a simpler tactical system, more automation, and a similar level of economy that it had before, I am so there...
Is this kind of like Age of the Empires where you have to highlight your characters and right-click a location on the map in order to move them there?

No. Civ (I've played the first one, so this is what I'm going to blither on about) is turn based, and you use the directional keys to move units across tiles.
The city creation is a lot more complicated, but less free than AoE.

Me too, Fedora comes with it pre-loaded (I'm sure other distros do too), my Linux box has no internet connection, though -- and I hate downloading anything on dialup. Maybe I'll join in when my connection is better.
Sweet, how new is this?
I'd love to play! I used to play it all the time when I had my Redhat computer set up.

I WOULD be in, but I have a life you kno? a girlfriend and all... That and I can't get it working :P
I'd love to join in, but it'd have to be soon; I started the new school year today, and things are going to start getting rather hectic around here in a week or so. =)

Freeciv has been around for atleast a few years, but got a set of new developers around May of 2004 I think, which sparked re-newed interest, and a score of improvements and changes.

i like the new isometric hexagon maps seen in the screenshots on the website.

i should be able to set up a fulltime-server for long games. my interest will likely be the medieval Japan scenarios (http://screenshots.freeciv.org/gallery/japan).
I would love to play! but um, what version do we use? the beta or the latest stable version? or does it not matter?
In response to Jermman
i would imagine the latest stable version is the best bet, but the beta 7 of version 2 looks really nice.
heheheh, I wasent aware Mordor was a nation in civilization. :P
ill be hosting a server for a good 5 hours or so when I get home from school in...6 hours. ill tell you when its up.

Edit: Darn, got home a little later than expected, and I cant figure out how to host ethier :P
wouldn't it take an eternity to play with more than 5 people?

Well it takes awhile to play anyway but with simultanious turns its not that bad as long as everyone knows how to play.
