You may all think, "what the hell" at the title of this topic, but it seems that game developers these days have exausted the history books, and are now moving to the future for game idaes. The possibilities are endless, and what a major possibility, than to extend into space?

The idea for games based on a space-theme related storyline has been around for years, and many have gone into the prospect. Such games I talk about are top brand games like Half Life, Halo, and Homeworld.

While I go into the theme myself, with 'Void' and the recent start to the development of Space Station 13 in 3D, I'm thinking, what other themes are there in the future? We can't just stop at space. I mean, come on...

What are your thoughts/ideas?

I personally think that we're also capable of extending into the telepathy/supernatural domain in the future, and while this remains a 'scary' 'unreal' and 'omg lk wtf lolz' subject for most people, it is certainly a prospect. Probability does not count in the future. There is no 'Yes' or 'No'. Nobody writes the future.
I'm currently working on a MORPG with a futuristic setting. Chances are it'll never be released (or even built).
It opens up some possibilities, but it closes a lot of doors. A lot of the 'tried and true' stuff just doesn't apply without Knights and Dragons.

Personally I like the Final Fantasy level. You can't really tell if it's past, present or future. It just takes what it needs from everything. If the badguy needs a gun he has a gun.
What are your thoughts/ideas?

The problem is space is very very large. Traveling to the nearest star system is unrealistic and even if we had a reasonable means of making anti-matter(as well as proper containment) there is the issue that human bodies can't withstand much force. What is more likely to happen is that we transcend the need for physical bodies and exist only digitally. We are getting closer and closer to unlocking how all the brain works. Without a body we can preserve our concious with a tiny fraction of energy of what our body uses not to mention that you can keep the mind alive forever so length of trips becomes much less of an issue. A machine properly built can have much more resistance to force which alleviates the problems of extreme accelleration. I think the future will turn to more of us creating our own realities as within our own conciousness in a digitally created world there are no limits.

i've tried to start up interest in a space sim, but often i get attacked by the same 'starting too many things yet not finishing any' syndrome that afflicts Spuzzum on occassion.

this has been an on-going project (on paper) for a couple of years.

I have heard that argument a lot. But I do not agree with it. Although taking off going 0-1000000000 would be impossible, who says we would take off like that? As far as we know, the entire universe is drifting one direction at 1e10^1000000000000 light years per second

We have no way of knowing. So a slow and steady increase in speed (along with suspended animation) would result in insane speeds being possible.

Ok, so it might still take a lifetime to reach a naboring sun, but at least we would.
I cant wait till someone makes a fully virtual reality MMORPG...You wear a full body suit..Goggles to see the world..That would be awesome..

The funny thing is, with the technology and knowledge we have nowadays, we can do that no problem. The creators would make hundreds of millions of dollars, but, for some reason, nobody has done it...yet....

What exactly gives you the idea that it is reasonably possible :P?

Not totally true. It would take a VERY powerful server to transmit all that information to thousands of people at once. The cost of the user would be enormous what with VR goggles and all. A full bodysuit would be insane.

Technology wise, it's probably half-assed doable. But when you look at the fiscal aspect, it hurts.

Haha, Theodis. So shall we call it the ascent to trandescance (er), and try and befriend 'an awakening alien God'?

Oh wait, gotta go Theodis, Deirdre is on line 6, can't keep that fox waiting...

:P

I dont care for Space or Sci-Fi all that much myself, but I do like cyber punk. I have been thinking a cyber punk games, a little like Shadow Run might be pretty fun on Byond, kind of a little like MLAAS, but done better. Cause I think MLAAS was a good idea done bad...

Anyways...

As for the future opening up new doors. I gotta agree. Animals have the 6th sense thing going on in some ways, why don't we? We are still animals. I think it was bred out of us, these people who just don't believe, and tell their children and others, its not real, shut up and go take your pills.

Now with our new age, and our open mindedness, I think things like the 6th sense are being bred back into us. Maybe in a few 100 years itll be full blowen.

As for the MMORPG... I think the body suit would be a little too much, BUT... if you ever played Shadow Run, you know the deck heads connect to network and the internet via connection inplants in their brains... I could see something like that later on, were we do not expierence the intenret via browers, but our minds. Dreams and imagation is a very powerful thing, and if we could harness that combined with the internet, the possbilites are pretty much endless.

I mean, its a poor example, but could you imagae playing EverQuest or Diablo II Online...within your own thoughs, actully seeing the combat up front, maybe even feeling the pain of a attack delt, or the vibration of a club in your hand as you crush a foes skull...

AWESOME.

Um...if what you say becomes true, then, I hope this little idea is not added. I do not think you would want to feel a player firing his magician skills at you, such as a lightning bolt, I mean...that would...hurt...badly. Actually, you would most likely die from the pain. =P

6th sense? <_<

True, some snakes can see Infrared to aid hunting, and Deer can see Ultra violet.

But shock, horror, we can see Visible light!

Animals probably can sense vibrations in the Earth before quakes, and classical conditioning (or Operant...bah...must revise) teaches Dogs to bark before their owners get home.

On occasion? Spuzzum's Syndrome is a silent killer that never goes away.

The transmitting of information would not be much different from a normal MMORPg, its just the user side cost would be massive. You already have all the data on your installed game, and get more while patching, the only thing the server does is tell your computer what to do with the files. So really, the only downside would be the cost of equipment for the user. Plus, this really isn't feasible at all.
In response to GokuDBZ3128
How do you know, have you ever been hit by a mage's lightning bolt? It might not feel like a normal lightning bolt, and if it does, then it certainly wont kill you, since its not the pain that kills you from a lightning bolt, its the fact that your body is superheated and overcharged with electron particles.
In response to Kusanagi
People have been hit with real lightning bolts. I'm told that it hurts. =P

Regardless, any force-feedback bodysuit - especially one connected to the internet - should be built to be incapable of causing actual pain. Imagine a computer virus that tortured people... Thought the Blaster worm was bad? Think again! =\

Yes, this is true...but think if you were hit by someone's level 27 lightning bolt. =P
In response to Kusanagi
Pain is simply your nervous system telling your brain that what ever is happening should not be happening and that some of the functions of your body cannot continue if it carries on.

rofl lolz i are lvl 28 n my lightning bolt dnt kill n1 yet.. lol
