I have no idea where to put this, so here it is, move as desired. ;) Looking through classified ads, my subject line ("I need a coder, an iconer, a mapper...") appears in some variation on a greater majority of all the posts. If you're hiring a coder, a graphics designer, and a mapper, what are YOU doing? Sitting around and taking the cash or what? Handing out ideas to slave-drive your minion workers with? It's beyond my level of comprehension what these people are doing when they ask everyone else to create their game for them. Somebody please clear this up for me!

Well, there are people like me. Although I have learned how to code, my strong point is designing the game. I can think of great things, stuff that would not be increadably hard, but would be really cool and original(or at least some-what close, its hard to think of something that hasn't been thought of before in a simular form.) I tought myself how to code so I could express my ideas to others without having to have someone else do all the work for me. Art and maps are still a pain to me though.

When I learned DM about 2 years ago I saw on the forums people needed icon makers also. So what I did was learn the language first than learn from lots of pixelation tutorials. Now I don't need any type of staff because I am a one man team who can program and do pixel work of my own taste. If everyone thought like me than icon artists wouldn't be in high demand here. I can even map, I don't why people find this hard. It just takes some creativity!

These people want to be dictators.
I just want to say that in almost every case, the icon artist should be making the maps anyway. Even the best-looking icons can look horrible when they aren't put together well. |
Hah, I have thought the same things when I read those types of C.A. posts :D

These people want to be dictators. I'm glad to say that my dev team is doing a fine job. JaceEvergreen is doing icons, mapping, and sharing a little creative input, then we have the module and interface guy (Yota) who is creating stand-alone modules that don't require modifications to existing code, as well as handling interface design (with Jace's graphical help) and creative input. Then I just tie up the loose ends and code a bunch in the middle. It's working out nicely. Plus, I actually have a SKILL with which to help my dev team! Amazing concept! ~Polatrite~ |
Well most of them are under the impression that they need multiple people doing each 'job'. So if you read the post they'll mention 'I can do some maps and icons and my friend Jimmy is learning to program' (or something to that extent).
They don't realise that to get programmers and artists to work together well requires very talented team members. The funny thing is, when you do have large teams like that you do need one person to sit back and tell everyone what to do. Around here it's probably the hardest job. Mainly because you have to tell people who aren't getting paid to work harder. |
A usual occurance (especially in Western, individualist cultures such as ours) is 'Social Loafing'. The more people on the team, the less effort the individual member puts in.

Dear confused Polatrite, they want to make a game they probably have an idea for a game they don't know how to make games other people here do know how to make games they would like some help hard to comprehend? i don't read many (if any) of those posts, but i don't think their intentions are to take all of the game's profits, or to be the slave driver. they don't know how to make the games, thats why they're asking for so much help, but they don't know that they're asking for a lot *because* they don't know what it takes. if you don't like their offers, don't help them... but i guess you could rant about it too =P |
Yeah but these kids want to make games. They don't really think of the work involved (at least not at the point where they are usually posting ads).

I don't think they understand that without contribuing anything mildly useful, nobody will join them or else the people who want to join them/do join them will end up taking over the team.
