Why isn't there an inexpensive piece of software designed specifically for the purpose of adding speech balloons to pictures?
Or is there, and I'm just searching on the wrong text?
(Of course BYONDscape has some fine support for adding speech balloons to BYOND games...)

Because you can add them your self with a basic paint program :P

Sizing said balloons is a real pain when you are putting them in pictures, and trying to fit text to one readable size.

If you made a program that just added speech bubbles I'm sure you would have a hard time selling any copies at all... There are many good, free paint programs, that while don't add those kind of things automatically, can be used to make them in a very short amount of time.

i would imagine a speech-bubble plugin for PhotoShop or GIMP would be possible and generate some cash from a support angle.

PSP already has a shape drawing tool that includes numerous styles of speech (and thought) bubbles...
I'd assume PhotoShop has the same... Of course, adding the text is up to you in a seperate function... I suppose a single tool that would allow you to type your message, format it, and then would render the text complete with a tailor-made bubble around it would be nice... But it's still a fairly simple matter to create a bubble, then add your text in with the text tool... Both can be created as vector images (which is the default, anyways, I believe), which can be resized and moved seperately from the rest of the image... So even sizing matters aren't an issue until after you've created them... |
I'm a bit late to this thread, but I'd just use Inkscape. Import the picture, use the ellipse tool for balloons and maybe the star tool for the balloon arrows, and then use the text tool with whatever font.

Actually it occurs to me that I have a program called SmartDraw that might work well for this. |
