I haven't played Fallout or Arcanum, but they're on my mental to-play list. I have played Fallout Tactics, which I thought was crap (tactics? instadeath puzzles more like), but I hear the "real" Fallout games are much different.

Yeah I think some other developer got a hold of the license for Fallout and did Fallout Tactics. It isn't really much like Fallout. Though if you want a decent squad based tactical game you need to go with Jagged Alliance 2. Arcanum is a great game though horribly balanced and is pretty easy with a plain fighter or a mage. However if you want a super challange try sticking only with guns :P. An arsonist is also fun since you can blow up doors, locks, or whatever else stands in your way :).

Yeah, I would've played with something different then a half-ogre brute, but it seemed like it'd be too hard and annoying. I remember one area that had a hell of a lot of traps, my guy could walk through them, but a weaker character might have to actually take care of them one by one.

One thing that I think would be interesting is an Arcanum PnP game. Me and some other BYONDers played Fallout PnP once, and that was a lot of fun(we stopped 'cause we didn't have someone who wanted to GM).

And you could also find a dozen or so scrolls of detect traps in the same dungeon :P.

Pfft... scrolls... right... What kind of loser uses scrolls? Half-ogres have no need for such vile contraptions! Ungh! Me smash trap with club!!

A good way to wreck your armor :P.

Just take it off. =P
Virgil can heal ya, and if he runs out of mana, just wait a few minutes. >_>

Right now I am playing as a Sharp Shooting Theif. So far, Ive stolen everything Ive needed, and made nice profits off of all the stupid NPCS of the town.

My gun is pretty effective, right now all I have is a rifel, everyone else I just give daggers. Althought when it comes into close quators combat, they will get beat down from time to time. :(

I remember mention of being able to own Hummers, but I never got to that point. Also, unless I was just that good, I never though you needed a path. And I only had one person die on me, then I lost interest of the game. I played it a good bit, probably about 6-8 hours.

I have always been a fan of Fallout, and I ordered, completely by chance Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura.

I'm not sure but I think I have Arcanum around (I know I have Planescape). Haven't tried either of those yet...I did buy a double-pack of Fallout and Fallout 2 for a total of $10, which is a great deal...

But I just haven't been able to get into Fallout, to my shame. The control system annoys the crap out of me.

Someday I should get over it and play all the way through.

When I first got Fallout, also in the twin pack, I disliked it at first too, and I actully didnt sit down, and play it until like.. 2 or 3 years later, heh..

After I started to play it, like really play it, I had a blast, I spent much more time, screwing with the NPCs and stuff, and finding ways to do the quests, without having to actully DO them.

Uh... what are you talking about? =P Nobody ever mentioned the last boss, and that page is completely out of context here. =) The page didn't say that you couldn't run up to the last boss and beat him, either.

Er, I think Shades mentioned that you could go anywhere in-game, including the last boss even when you first start, but you'll most likely not win.

There are multiple ways to kill the last boss, anywhere from out smarting him, to out gunning him, to a few other ways.

The fact is though, the further south you go [And his temple is WAY south] the harder the encounters get, and the meaner they get.

Not only that, you need a extreamly high conversation level to even get remotely close to out talking the last Boss.

Finally, unless your cheating, there is no way in hell, that your going to be able to pick the locks in his building to get into his lair. And unless you cheated, there is no way you'll be able to nuke his guards, take their keys and sneak in.

Anyway you cut it, you COULD try to get to the last boss, but you WOULD fail.

...Did any of you acutal watch the movie? and i was reffering to fallout 2 I probably got confused...
In response to Dark_Shadow_Ninja
Any of them it would be extramly hard, if not near impossible to do it. Alot of what that guy did was relyant on luck.

I had this horrible habit of getting caught up with the "steal" command in fallout. I'd save it and try to steal nearly everything a person had. Generally I'd do this about any and every citizen I encountered. Time consuming, to say the least.

Stealing is the easyest way to get what you need. Its also a good way to "plant" explosive on mob kings and the slavers when you have to fight them.

I also found its easyer to play the game as bad, instead of good. Go figure.
In response to Shades
Well, generally the less moral do tend to get things easier. It's a trade-off.
Would you recommend getting Fallout 1 or 2?
