let me add proof that people then were stupid(er) compared to people now: they thought hiding under a desk could protect them from a any#-megaton neuclear missile...

Yeah, I tend to agree, Elation. I mean, I'm pretty doom-and-gloom myself for humanity's future prospects, but I don't think it's because of moral failings (or at least, any new ones). "The good old days" never really existed. Are job quotas (or actual affirmative action) really a sign of a sicker or less moral society than "Colored Water Fountains" and "Irish Need Not Apply" signs? If almost everybody categorically gets married before they have sex or childen, but they do it out of fear and shame or because there's no other options for women, is that the result of superior moral teaching?
Mostly, when people talk about how great society used to be, they're talking (knowingly or not) about the advantages of living in a world where "everybody knows their place." |

Five words: duct tape and plastic sheeting.
:P What you're talking about, though, is a matter of psychology rather than intelligence. The fact was that the average person, the average child can do -nothing- to affect their own chances of survival in a nuclear holocaust. That fact is a tremendously damaging one to be aware of. The kind ol' civil defense folks made films of the "duck and cover" genre by way of giving kids a placebo. No, it wouldn't help them if their city got bombed... but it did help them right up until that point. :P |

And what do the other kids do when they learn it doesn't work? I'd rather know I'm going to die, and there's nothing I can do about it so I'd try and do something about it than I'll be fine and just ending up dying because I did nothing.

Pop, it's kinda the point that they WON'T learn it doesn't work. I mean, how many survivor witnesses of an atomic bomb are there?

Well, i'd at least try to make it out of where I would die. If you wouldn't try and save yourself, there's something wrong with you.
{Edit} and concerning the witness thing, there are none because the bright light blinds you immediately |

actually... The united states first atomic bomb testing.... Yes, because the U.S. actually got small children to duck-and-cover in the vicinity of the testing area! Sure, there are witnesses of an atomic bomb- from afar, or from the aircraft you just dropped it from. Have there been any survivor witnesses that would be able to confirm whether ducking-and-covering actually works? :p |

i doubt it because the force of the bomb rips your body apart leaving little-to-nothing left

But you can see the blast from miles away from the blast site.

50 years ago sucked! I mean, c'mon. What happened in the 20th century? World War 1, World War 2, the Cold War...only mentioning a few of the bad vibes coming from that century. Clearly, people were taught the wrong stuff, because everyone back then was Very Stupid. Yeah, people were dumb back in those days, I mean, we only invented the television around then. Such a useless invention nowadays, eh? |

Yeah, because T.V. hasn't incited the huge amount of obesity and lack of exercise that's killing off thousands every year...

If people are dieing because of a television set then they really need to think about laying it off for awhile. Also, death had nothing to do with your topic. You stated that people were dumb and nothing ever happened in the 20th century, meanwhile, the television and the Internet were both created and they are the two most widely-used inventions in the world. We would not be having this conversation right now if people were as dumb as you thought back in the 19th century.

"You stated that people were dumb and nothing ever happened in the 20th century"
On the contrary, LOADS of things happened in the 20th century! Mass murdering, brutal pointless wars... Death and suffering was certainly to do with my topic. I was just trying to bend your post to make it seem like television was just as evil as all the rest of the stuff- just as a dumb invention. We would not be having this conversation right now if people were as dumb as you thought back in the 19th century. Sure, but that's not exactly a good thing. :p |

If I knew the united states was bombing japan, Id research the range of the blast and watch the explosion.

On the contrary, LOADS of things happened in the 20th century! Seems to happen just about every century :P. Just need to get rid of politics and religion :). |
