What are your thoughts on the ethics of File Sharing?
I would feel bad if I stole something from a store but I feel no guilt in downloading an MP3 or TV Show.
I do feel bad if I were to download a movie still in theaters, but not one on DVD. (I don't download movies anymore at all because the MPAA scares me too much =P)
...but let's say you hear a song you like on the radio, and then you go download it. Do you feel like you stole that from someone?
I don't. Especially on TV recordings.

I don't either. I know this isn't a very good excuse, but my mom barely makes enough money to pay the bills. I have a very small amount of money, and I could never afford paying for many things. I own a decent portion of my games, but I just don't have the money to buy new ones. The allowance I used to get from my dad stopped(my parents are divorced, my dad's a bastard, so he can't legally see me anymore, long story), so I only get money on special occasions. It's not like I have a choice of buying it. It's either not get it, or download it.

I dont feel bad about what I download at all, mainly because I cant download much anyway :p.
But, I find things nowa days are too expensive to buy. Or, I just cant get my hands on them. If I had the money I would buy my things, because I'm sure as hell gunna be too pleased about people downloading my stuff :P. |
I recently downloaded the PC version of Metal Gear Solid and I feel really bad about it. The thing is I know it's stupid to feel bad because I already own several copies of the PSX version, they just keep on getting either lost or lent and never returned.
I'd go out and buy MGS: Twin Snakes for the Gamecube, but I really can't justify paying so much for a remake of a game I've already beaten the snot out of. I did the same thing with FFVII. I've got two real copies of the original, but one was stolen when my friends house got robbed and I lent the first disc of the other to a guy I haven't seen since High School. I don't think I'd feel bad with TV recordings, I remember I downloaded StarWars: Clone Wars. I had Cartoon Network (which was playing them) but I missed usually missed them or switched on in time to catch the last twenty seconds. I think the key difference with TV recordings is that I've never downloaded anything that I couldn't tape off TV myself, and if I couldn't tape it off TV there was no other way to get it (ie, it wasn't out on DVD or on a channel I don't have). |

I steal from stores. I don't feel bad. After all stealing a cd on the Internet is the same thing as in person right? I mean, in real-life you get scared, why not the Internet?

I don't feel bad about it because somebody else who put it up in the first place. Not me..They are sharing what they own(at least somebody was). I don't relaly care..I'll burn cds until they force me not to..

I really don't download mp3s. On occasion I may send a friend a song or, gasp, I sent one the entire FFVII PC game(not happening again), but it's uncommon. For music, I stick to the basics- I'll play what I have, or I'll play the radio. Just a different kind- SHOUTcast Radio on Winamp.

I don't mind. After all, someone bought it, right? Who cares if they decide to make a copy fo something they own.
If it was wrong, they wouldn't have made floppy disks/blank tapes/cd burners. Its as simple as that. |
Well, I stopped downloading MP3's a long time ago. But I am still a small time pirate. I used to pirated almost every peice of software on my computer. No, I reach for free alternitaves. On occation, I will download a game, but I rarly keep it. Normaly, I download it as a demo, to see how the online is going to be, if I like it, I buy it. If I don't, I delete it. I don't buy games without online play, not do I play them much. My basic eithic is, if they don't put enough into the game to make it worth 30-50$, then why am I going to spend that much? In general, games cost way too much. How come games are $50 a pop when movies are no more than $20, brand new. A movie has many, many highly paid actors/directors/ and other crew. Along with that thousands of extras, most of which are payed a small amount for walkon roles. I do not download movies, seems like a pointless venture. I could just go to the movie store and rent it, or buy it even. CDs are a ripoff. I understand artists want money, but from what I have heard, they normally get 1-5% of the profit from the CD. Most of thier money is made though concerts, and a recording of a concert just isn't the same. The main cost of CD's is from the record companys, they must be sooooooo loaded.

Movies generally cost less because it was already out in theaters and made money that way. Video games cost lots of money to create and the only way they get money is by selling the game. Music CDs have many middlemen, barely any of that money goes to the actual artist, that's why they're so expensive.

Theaters are less than a DVD, so I doubt that is the full reason. And Music bands have thier own version of movie theaters, they are called concerts. Maybie they need to cut down on the middlemen a bit so they can attract costumers. Look at the online song buying places, normaly 99c a song. Think about that, it is about $12 a cd(for a cd full of music)
There are a lot less middlemen there, there isn't even a sales floor or half the workers(Most of it is automated, so you don't need but a few workers for customer support). |

I don't know where you live, but it's about $9 a person where I live to go to a mutliplex. I think that the movie company sells the movie reels to the theater for a lot of money, but I don't know exactly. For a $20 DVD, you can get have a lot of people watch that one DVD for one price. If say you and 9 other people went to the movie theater, that's about $100 where I live. Compared to you and 9 other people sitting down and watching a DVD for $20.
Concerts are also expensive, I think the least expensive ones are still $20-$40 a person. It costs a lot of money to buy all that equipment, pay people to set the equipment up, and pay other people to test it. There's also security, instruments, managers, your band, etc. I saw a website once where it was only 5 cents a song. I also read something about 'micropayments' such as everyone pays 5 cents per song and that 5 cents goes directly to the artist, so people aren't getting ripped off and the artist is making money. I don't know about that exactly though, because don't you still have to pay your band and your manager at least? |

Well, here it costs $8.50 to get into the movies, but ti costs only $3 between 5 P.M. and 6 P.M.
And then there is a theatre that only charges $2 no matter what the time is. But yeah, your right. It's a lot cheaper to buy the movie than to see it at the movies. |
