How did you even get Vista? As far as I can find, it doesn't come out till next year....
He has the Beta, which can be abtained many ways, the most legal of which, would be to be a beta tester.

So its not longhorn, its vista now?

Longhorn was the project's code name. Windows Vista is the name it will ship with. ex. Windows "XP".

Yep. Really, it's old news. You should keep on the up-and-up.

Why did a mod edit this post, by the way?

It's green... doesn't that mean a mod edited it?

it makes sense that BYOND is not focusing on issues related to a pirated copy or pre-release of an OS that has not hit the mainstream yet, nor been officially released (as far as i know).

i would imagine that once Vista comes out officially, and the developers purchase copies to tinker with, *then* you might see support for that platform.

I personally hope they dont blow a few hundred on it, just to get byond working. From what I've seen of Vista, there is nothing special that you cant get from linux. So, spend time getting BYOND up to scratch on it? >_>

Problem is, Smoko, Vista is the next step up. Anyone normal computer user who either gets an upgrade (so they can use the latest games/programs built for it or whatever) or gets a new computer will mostly likely have Vista installed.

It'd hurt BYOND not to be compatable for Vista, because otherwise BYOND would be one 'generation', one step behind in compatability and usability (even if earlier versions of Windows are better versions), alienating a large percentage of current or future users.

I can't imagine Microsoft would make that many changes to it so that BYOND and other such programs would stop working, however. It'd make sense that they'd try and keep it backwards compatable.
Well, maybe not. =/ There's plenty of programs and games that I can't get to work on XP and Microsoft, knowing their nature, would love to force people to buy MS Office (or some similar program) all over again to continue working in their jobs.

On that note, my dad works for the council (so essentially, the government) and they've been uninstalling MS office off all their computers and installing StarOffice...seems people are finally clocking that MS's software sucks.

Maybe a BYONDer or benefactor (or BYONDefactor!!... >_>) would be willing to send the BYOND staff a legal copy of Vista so the staff could check it out. I hope it would be easy to get running.

Vista isn't due out properly for quite a while now - I think it's scheduled for either late 2006 or 2007. There's really no hurry. Heck, Microsoft might even fix its backwards-compatibility before then and BYOND will work without modification.

Thats the problem now days, you end up paying an [butt]load for a computer, mainly because its got some pre-installed crappy program.

I personally think people would be more willing to try other software and stuff if they had to choose. I know what I'm about to say is off topic, but oh well. I'm not against Microsoft having Windows Media Player come with windows, but am against having to purchase a new pre built computer with no option of if I want Windows or not. And having to pay the extra fee.
In response to Smoko
A buttload? Not really. Computers are fairly cheap if you think about how much they they were priced at a few years ago. Technology is getting cheaper. You can buy a decent laptop for under $500 today. That wasn't possible last year.

Laptop for $500? No, you can get a crappy laptop these days for $500. If you want a decent laptop, you are going to pay, at least $700, but probably wont be worth it untill you hit $1000 and up. Computers are cheap these days, but you get what you pay for. Windows Vista will cost, as a guess, $300 on release. What you will get is a buggy and hole filled OS not worth the plastic it is burnt onto. After about a year, it will become a bit more stable, and capible of being used by the masses. I will not buy or pirate vista untill it has dropped in price and been proven as worth it's cost. Computer manufacterers will need to increase the price of computers to balance the new cost of Vista as apposed to the cost of XP. I personally would rather save $30 to not even have windows XP on it.

My mum and dad's laptops were both about 1,774.51 USD (1,000 GBP) ...they came with quite a few extras 'n' stuff, but they're quality laptops. They can run GTA III okayishly.
In response to Elation
Why is a game your benchmark for how good a laptop is? Laptops are not made for gaming, not saying I have never played a game on a laptop(Good for RTS games because somebody can use it without a desk in my room), but if I bought a laptop, I would buy it for speed, ram, and harddrive space. I want a laptop for mobil computing and the ability to move from room to room as needed. But this is far off topic, and you proved my point, to get a quality laptop, you are going to pay a good bit, and the same goes for desktops.

Because GTA III was the only thing I ever run on my Mum's laptop, that's why. =p

Still, I really wish they could atleast hurry up with a GUI Pager for linux.

What even happened to LINUX Compatability huh!?
So what if there are 5% of BYONDers running linux?
That's still the 5% that will be happier.
