I know this is kind of random, but I always get an image of someone when I am reading their posts, or otherwise communicating with them over the Internet. Mostly the image I get is based on their style of communicating, but my first impression is always set by their name. One day, it kind of hit me that =$= Big J Money =$= could potentially be gangsta', but I'm not sure? Mainly because I'm pretty much a cracker, and also kind of naive. So, I was just curious if anyone ever thought of me as a black dude `cause of my name.
I'm going to apologize in advance for this absolute waste of time, but I'm so easily amused.

Well, no not really. I tend to think people who's name are "gangsta/thuggish" or try and talk "gangsta/thuggish" are NOT black. I'm black and I use slang every now and then but I try to use understandable english when typing on byond.

Ah, so it has the reverse effect with you. See, I would have never known that! Yeah, I don't know what it is with some white people and this fascination to appear black for some kind of validation. By the way, my nickname was given to me by my best friend back in 95. My name is John Mauney, and he always would call me John Money because it was easier to say (?). One day he was very hyper and Big J Money came out of his mouth, and kind of stuck to me. The mainstream Internet community was still fairly young at the time, so that was when a lot of people were forming their Internet identities, I suppose. This one has stayed with me. Back in the BBS days, my 'alias' was...
-==<<<JOHNNY BOY>>>==- ...how lame. Oh wait, Big J is lame too, doh. =$= |

People seem to be very judgemental on key names. Everyone thinks I'm female, although that probably isn't helped by my encouragement of such an opinion. Yes, very judgemental. People think I'm a noob because i used to like dbz. Even though my key was forged long before most people on byond. |
I would first consider that just a sig, not much to do with their real selves like most sigs are... But I would associate "=$= Big J Money =$=" with a white guy before a black guy.

Usually I immediately think of anyone on BYOND as a guy. Unless there key says otherwise. Example:
Hedgemistress LesbianAssassin Those kind of names are usually dead give-aways. |
I don't generally picture people in terms of white/black based on a name. Male or female, yes, and more often male online because it's such a safe assumption. But otherwise I have no idea.
Amusingly I've at least twice seen someone in a chat accuse the entire assembly of racism because they must somehow be aware of their skin color. When the "Hey stupid, we can't see you" argument popped out, they would switch to "You must be able to tell from the way I talk." Uh, yeah. How many coherent people have you met on the Internet? White, black, polka-dotted, pretty much everyone is a functional illiterate online, and the few exceptions are the ones who actually care about how they come off verbally. Neither style can tell you anything about a person's race, and often don't tell you much about their personality either. Lummox JR |
Im black. I usually dont picture peoples skin color by their keys but I assume everyone is caucasion(sp?).

I have to admit that if I'd thought about it, I would have gained that impression. But I didn't really think about it until you asked, so my perception may have been biased by your suggestion. =)

One time on a Byond game a guy was trying to claim I was discriminating against him because he was black, and wouldn't listen to me when I told him I had no idea what he looks like, but he later admitted to being drunk at the time so all was good in the end.
Ah, the internet. The only place where every man is a man, every woman is a man, and every child is an FBI agent. :P http://bash.org/?491664 |

...or until you start to use teamspeak. Then you also find out who all the Canadians are...(that's why they were so nice)

Honestly don't care if you're black or bright green, as long as the race card isn't played out of spite, it doesn't matter.
And yes, I've had people bitch me out in pages saying I banned them for being a minority, or that I'm a minority (I'm not, but give the US 40-50 years and I probably will be). |
*edit*
Also, no, I haven't made an assumption on your skin colour because I don't really know who you are.
