Up until very recently my DVD-RW Burner worked perfectly! I've only had it a few months but now it just wont work properly. I to seems to burn DVD's correctly but when I try to copy anything from a DVD, it just keeps giving and error something along the lines of:

Cannot Copy xxxxxx: the request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

I can run anything from the DVD but as soon as I try to copy off it gets a little way in then has a spaz attack. It's driving me nuts as I just burnt off some very important stuff and now cannot access it! ARGH!

Burner = Liteon SOHW-1673S

Help Me Please!

Much appreciated.

if it's heavily used or old, it could just be wearing out. the read/write armature does wear out over time or get off track/off sync, causing read errors. probably cheaper to replace it, than get it fixed.

the laser head could also be dirty - look up DVD cleaning kits on your favorite search engine or local computer/electronics shop.

It just doesnt make sense. It burns correctly with no errors but just wont read anything. I can ope files directly from the DVD but as soon as I want to copy anything it gives me that I/O error. It's not heavily used in any way, maybe 2 times in a month, and it isnt old, no more than 3 months! Ill try the cleaning thing and see hwo that goes.

[edit]

I've been messign wiht it and it seems that smaller files of soemthing liek no more than 10MB will copy fine but anything over will copy up till about that point and then give me a device I/O error... What's going on argghhh!

back in the days when i used a RadioShack TRS-80 (i think my father still has it), and Commodore 64, occassionally the disk-drive would write properly, but not read all the time. it turns out that over time the armature that moves the read/write head can get ever so slightly 'off-track', seemingly writing ok, but writing *in-between* tracks on the disk because the head was slightly off. this made reading tricky because the head would sometimes slip back on track, and since the data was written on literally half-tracks, the device had problems reading the data.

i've also had an AOpen CD burner with similar behavior. it would burn ok, but reading the data was a crap-shoot - sometimes it was no problem, and other times the CD acted like it was a bad burn (though other drives in the house might have better success in reading the funkily-burned disk.

if the drive does not work better after cleaning, my guess is that the read/write laser is off-track somehow. depending on the price and age of the drive, plus the price of a repair, you will have to decided whether to get it fixed or replaced. you'll need someone who is a specialist in re-aligning those drives. my guess it's probably cheaper to replace it - *or* return it if you still have the receipt or warranty.

I beleive it may have just been a hardware error as I uninstalled the device and reinstalled it after a reboot and it worked fine.

Thanks for your help though,
