Recently I have tried to download some rather large files. Unlike in the past, however, my Internet has randomly shut itself off during the downloads, and I have to kill it and reconnect manually to get service back.

ADSL. Do you know what would cause this? Maybe this is SBCYahoo's anitpiracy measure?

Although I never said what I was downloading was illegal.

It could just be the fault of your ISP. In the meantime, if you don't use a download manager and this keeps up you'd probably find this to be handy.

(That is, assuming you can stay online to download this. :P)
Well, my router would go out every time I streamed a wmv from the net.

Ah, thanks. The problem only occurs when a single download lasts over a few hours. If the internet is idle, it will stay on for weeks! (I lasted 23 weeks straight on my DSL with no interrupts)

I am not using a router though :(

I hope to get one (Even has WiFi!) within the month though so I can finally play my DS online ;)

It might also be that your computer doesn't know that it was disconnected for x amount of time if it doesn't try to do anything, but with big downloads, it gets broken when it stops in the middle. Oh ya, can I not recommend a router. Linksys, I strongly don't recommend a linksys router.

Well, everything is dead when I awake in the morn. Like, the GMAIL Notifier is dead, and Mozilla won't load pages.

It just sits there until I manually make XP reconnect. :(

It might be thier way of stopping piracy, or at least bandwidth hogs. Call them up and ask them why.

if it's DSL, sometimes the modem is designed to shut off after a certain amount of inactivity (maybe the download site got so slow it was not sending packets anymore for a while?). usually the modem has some sort of 'keep alive' feature that reconnects automatically after a disconnect (mine does that).

of course that does not explain why it stays connected when your computer is idle. :p (maybe there is a spyware/virus in there someplace spreading itself out across the net via your comp? it's occasional activity could keep the line up).

a download manager will help, in any case. GetRight is a favorite of mine under Windows.

What's wrong with Linksys? I used one for a while and I had 0 problems with setting it up. :-/
I guess it was just a fluke, because last night it continued all night and finished the download, as well as keeping my internet connection alive through morning.

*shrugs*

I guess it was just a fluke, or something on my ISP's end, perhaps.

Thanks for the replies though, a download manager is a good idea :)

So my guess might have been correct? Woo!

One time, we had a power outage in my neighborhood. For the next two weeks, apparantly everyone's download speeds were .05 kilobytes per second. I had to F5 and F5 and F5 just to pull up Google.
