Hi im just starting to learn the Byond language by the guide book. Does anyone have any tips for me? How long did it take one of you to learn the language real well?
DM is a really easy language to learn, and a lot of people know it really well. That takes no time really, at all. You may forget a couple of built-in procs and variables from time to time, but you can always look it up. However, that is not really the question.

Someone can learn the entire language and still not be a very good programmer. Your style accounts for many things, and actually putting it to use counts even more. Knowing how to do something is a lot more important that simply knowing what it's about. Sort of like the meaning of Geometry. It's basically applying math to shapes.

Useful to know? Not really, unless you are in some sort of trivia contest. Can you use the meaning at all otherwise? Nope. You need to know how to use it and how to apply it to everyday life.

DM is just like that. You need to know how to apply it to your wants, and this requires a lot of experimentation, imagination, and questions. Their are plenty of people to help you out along the way, too.
Hi.

I wish you well with that.

Start by making lots of small practice worlds to get the hang of what you're learning. That helps better than starting in with a game idea and expecting to learn as you go, unless you don't mind completely redoing the game every once in a while, while you're learning, to make it work better.

I started by making several small worlds with little to do in them must to test out what I was learning. I then started on a test game which I built onto as I learned, but still making little test worlds on the side to figure out how certain things worked. I completely redid the test game from the beginning several times over as I learned better ways to do everything.

About a month I think it was. I had prior computer programming experience, which helped a lot; but I did not have any experience with an object-oriented language, which I found an odd concept until everything started falling in place in my mind.

Welcome!
Welcome BYOND! I don't have much to add to everyone else's comments, except to say that I like your handle.

Heh, y'know, if we were to ever end up on any sort of team together we'd have to call it "Crispy Fries of Doom".

That would be amusing.

I'd laugh, anyway.
