me and Hanns have been getting a virus from BYOND, we have tracked it to BYOND, and we're 100% sure it's BYOND. This virus tracks your e-mail and starts sending out 1000's of e-mails, trying to infect other computers, and even infects other computers on your network. My guess is it's probably linked to the pager, and some player is doing it, but I need to bring this to the awareness of the community and Dan/Tom, or any other BYOND staff,

thanks - buzzyboy
we're 100% sure it's BYOND.

Try double checking.

"From" BYOND? Comes with the BYOND installation .exe?

It doesn't sound like anything that would come from BYOND. Sure you haven't gotten owned by Black Worm or something?

My guess is it's probably linked to the pager, and some player is doing it

Question: How? Also, if a player is doing it, it's not coming from BYOND.

It's coming from BYOND, from a player, it's a theory about the player though. All I know is, I'm getting a crappy virus, and it tracks it to byond.exe.

Perhaps a virus from elsewhere has infected byond.exe, as viruses tend to do? :)

Than byond.exe is too vunerable, and should be changed to not be so. Either way, it's from BYOND, Jim, or DSL provider said it was from byond.exe, nothing else infected it.

Orrr...you could get a better firewall. =p

My DSL provider told me that firewalls are bad and I should get rid of mine. :)

Could I get a copy of the infected file in a password protect zip? I want to verify its source. you can use the email under my profile.

Who said I got rid of my firewalls?

my dad has already deleted everything, if I had it, I would give it to you. but it's not that byond.exe is infected, it gives you a virus that sends out 1000's of e-mails.

What I meant was don't believe everything your ISP tells you. They want you off the phone as quickly as possible. If they can blame a problem on a firewall, on kazaa, on anything, they'll do it. It's what their script tells them to do.

The problem is you’re the only one seeing this, As far as most of us can tell. As such I believe that it is not byond giving the virus but rater a worm or virus else ware on the computer.

Please run a full virus scan with house call or panda active scan and see what it turns up.

Or get a real virus scanner like AVG.

AVG is pretty good and pretty free, which is why I like it so much.

I have never heard of anyone getting a virus from BYOND and I think its all bunk really. Did you some some Virus Scanners, some of the best, most expensive ones, will actully tell you that there is a virus attached to a file or program, when in reality it really ISNT?

Take Macafee and Norton, some of the most expensive virus protection I have ever seen. They use that on my Family PC downstairs. I installed a game for it once, from a CD for my little sister, which I Have NEVER had problems with, and Macafee started shouting all sorts of stuff about it being a virus.

BTW has anyone been hit with that Black Wurm yet?

As I said black worm was a dud.

as for the op, I told him to use an online scan because his computer is compromised. as such any software that is installed could be rooted.

ps. If you like free anti-virus software try H+BEDV AntiVir. it's light and detects more then avg.
There is no BYOND virus. If there were, this would've turned up before now. Being the user of several high-quality Anti-Virus/Spyware/Malware programs, I surely would've caught it by now if there were. And if not I, then someone who is even MORE computer fluent surely would've. The most likely concept is that you got attacked by a virus elsewhere, and it decided to infect byond.exe...which of course is what they tend to do(infect things).

Why would it do that? Well, by most BYOND users that have upgraded, byond.exe is a frequently used program. What virus wouldn't want to infect such a frequently used program? Also, 'b' is pretty high-up alphabetically, so in an alphabetical list it could be a quick-pick(though I'd suspect the thing with usage-rating over this theory). Another, much less likely theory, is that a BYOND user created such a virus to attack others holding the byond.exe file. This wouldn't have been done in-game, of course, since BYOND has a very nice security thing that allows you to choose what gets executed and what doesn't.

Anyhow, the point is that there is no virus on BYOND. If it's an e-mail deal, you probably have a piece of malware lying around sending out unsolicited e-mails. I think it's pretty bad when someone goes, "Oh teh noes! I got a virus! I use BYOND; since I use BYOND online and because it's freeware, it must be the source! 100% sure!"

Hiead
And I see delicate phrasing has not been used. First, I would like to add I'm not '100% sure' - I'm pretty sure it's not BYOND at all. This is mostly to try and ease the parents - who believe that BYOND is indeed infected. (I believe it started with one of the previous scenarios described by someone with McAfee.)

..Sigh.
