I have recently aqcuired an old dell computer. I started it up, and found the process runs at 200mhz. I'm looking to upgrade the computer, what should I upgrade? Ive got a rather small budge, but I want the most BANG for my buck.
Motherboard
-Bus Speed (66 or 100 mhz)
-Ram Capacity (384 megabytes)
-e139761
Current CPU
-Intel Pentium (MMX Tech)
-200 mhz clock speed
-Bus 66 mhz
- http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Pentium/ Intel-Pentium%20MMX%20200%20-%20FV80503200.html
Current Ram
-32 megabytes of Ram
Any suggestions for an upgrade? I would rather not replace everything. I would like to not spend a fortune, any suggestions? I've got plenty of ram to slip in, Should I upgrade the motherboard? Or should I invest in a 800 mhz CPU?

Definitely upgrade the RAM. I'd say processor next, if you can find something for it. Not much point in upgrading the motherboard. |
That's not worth upgrading. Just put Damn-Small-Linux or PuppyLinux on it and fiddle around :)

I went to my Local Walmart and bought a computer for 500 dollars.
Works well and gets the job done XD |
Actually, I recently installed DSL on a system with very simular specs. The results where ok, but it didn't like to be run as a live CD. I would recommend upgrading the ram if you can find some that works with it.

I think the dumpster would be a good upgrade for it :P trash a perfectly good machine? you must have money to throw away! 200Mhz was what the first digitalBYOND server had, with 384MB of RAM originally. it ran Chatters and Hedgerow Hall quite decently with an average of 20-30 people between the two games. such a machine makes a great Linux-based BYOND hosting server for one or two heavy traffic games. as mentioned before, put as much RAM into it as you can. would also work as a good little websever or home-based file-server/backup-server/print-server. regarding upgrading the processor, check first to make sure the motherboard can handle it. otherwise you might end up needed a new motherboard anyway. |
