Whenever I use torrents, it seems that I can't access the internet through any other source (be it Firefox, AIM, or DreamSeeker.) I thought that perhaps it was my BT client (BitTornado) so I switched to Azureus. No difference. As soon as a close the torrent client, the internet magically works again. There's no way it could be peaking my download speed; most torrents I use don't hit over 100kB, and I download faster than that all the time from sites and even people over AIM.

Anyone have any reason this could be happening?

Hmm... I just noticed that I'm uploading ~35kBps, which is pretty much my maximum upload speed. Could the fact that I'm maxing out on upload cause the rest of my connections to stop working?

Just so you know what I mean; AIM disconnects, BYOND gives me "BYOND Central is not accessible.", and Firefox just gives me "The connection has timed out" even when trying to connect to 192.168.1.1

Any idea?

Thanks!
Try limiting your upload speed. Sometimes, it takes a really long time to access the internet when my upload is high. Most torrent programs like BitComet or uTorrent allow you to limit download and upload speeds.

My connection does come to a stop if I upload over 45kbps on anything. I have to make sure to limit my upload on anything I use. Most torrent clients allow you to limit your upload speed. I personally use BitComet for my torrenting needs(I have uploaded Ubuntu 6 times the file size, a 6:1 share rating, not too bad, support your favorite linux distro).
It's the upload rate. Uploading a large amount makes most networks and connection go really really slow.
Thanks for your replies, everyone.

I tried this out briefly, but it didn't seem to fix immediatly. Normally I wouldn't mind; I'd just set it to run at night when I'm sleeping. However, I am on a network, and my brother often stays up late chatting and doing online gambling. Hopefully leaving the upload speed limited for a longer period of time for the changes to take effect would work.

There could be a limit on the number of 'connections' to whatever that can be opend by your computer - either set by your router/modem/isp or by your OS. Bittorrent requires you to make craploads of connections, so that could be affecting it.
Your program could just be using up too many resources. I had a old PC, that while you were listeing to a music CD, none of the web pages I tried to view would load up.
