In North America and it Europe, the Xbox sold more than Gamecube. In Japan, they pwnt the Xbox.
The PSOne pwnt everyone in sales, including the GBA+SP. And, as for the major console systems, Playstation 2 sold the most consoles. |

The only reason they make gaming systems is for money. If they didn't make money at all, they would not produce the system. It's as simple as that. Companies need money to survive. Where'd they get all the money to make the PSP and the PS3 anyway? I don't know if you know this, but I've heard that Microsoft and Sony have been making money before they began making consoles. :P |

Yeah except for the fact we are talking video games, if you want to split hairs, Nintendo has been making money just as long as Sony has, as Nintendo wasn't always a video game company, but instead designed and sold casino stuff.

Of course! This is where it gets to the clever bit. Most consoles produce a loss for their company; it doesn't matter.
The strategy is to get as many as possible into people's homes around the world, thus growing their user-base.
They make the *real* money off selling the games. You can't sell games to someone who doesn't have a console!
So basically, flog your consoles at a loss to grow your user-base, then make the money by selling games to that massive user-base.

(oh wait, JP already mentioned this)
