How popular is BYOND outside of ummm...BYOND?

I just would like to know
Well I live in a small town, roughly 4k population. If I were to take an educated guess at how many people play BYOND from my town Id say 10 give or take a few. I think it just depends on where you live on how popular it is, because some of my neighboring towns of my gaming friends that I talk to have never heard of BYOND.
Well...In my town(pop 10,000~) I was the first to find BYOND. Since then...I have gathered about...15 people to play BYOND.

I know of only two people in my city that know of BYOND, me being one of them.

Around my area. I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who plays. i tried to get my best friend to play, but he failed in having internet or a working computer later on. the only other person, I know that plays BYOND lives 40 mins away, in Guelph. (Dark_rathen)

I don't know of anyone else around here that knows of BYOND. I remember (not really well, however) someone else around here saying that they lived around here. I live in Oklahoma City myself.

Same here. I did get two of my really good friends to try it out, but they were too stoopid to figure out how to install it... or so they say.
People call out in the streets; "HEY ELATION I LOVE YOUR BLOG"*.

*shut
Apparently popular enough to be blocked at my school before I ever got a chance to visit it :'(

I've tried wearing my Byond T-shirt at school, but so far no one has stopped me talk about it :'(

I know of at least 34 people in ottawa including myself.
BYOND has been given quick spot lights on popular game TV shows. So it has to be at least semi popular.

What ones?

I saw it on a vide game themed show, on a channel I used to get up north called G4. I don't remeber the name of the show. They gave it like a 5 min spot light.
I was talking to this girl once, and I asked her what she was doing, and she said "Oh I'm playing games online....", so I thought Yahoo or Pogo and i wanted to join because I was bored.... Then she said "BYOND. You ever heard of it?", and it was probably strange for me to say "yeah.... I made like 8 games on that site." She ended up being a DBZer, though >_>

Other than that her and her boyfriend, though, I don't know of anyone who had used BYOND, and as for my friends, they were all scared off because they had to download a client. I don't get why BYOND's client is so scary to people, but they all think it will give them spyware and crap.

I can understand where they're coming from. When I first started surfing the internet my mother told me "Never open any files that end in .exe because they can contain a virus and destroy the computer!" You still hear that all of the time regarding email attachments and while it's not unfounded, people get carried away by their own paranoia.

I've become more "adventurous" with my downloading habits since then, but originally I spent a couple of weeks of contemplation and eventually saved all important files to disks before I dared to download (let alone install) AOL Instant Messenger.

Several years later, here I am playing the part of ameteur computer maintenance and repairman for my click-happy dad. ¬_¬

Actually, I've tried to get a couple of friends into BYOND, and they had no problem downloading the engine and making a key. BYOND is a small download, and it takes seconds to install and get an account going. Maybe it's just the intelligence or computer literacy of the people.

However, the games just didn't stick with most of them, either because they weren't 3D, or if you're new you might see a few low-quality games and think they're all like that, or whatever the reason be. One of my friends really liked Mafia though, although he didn't play it, or BYOND regularly. I prefer BYOND because the games are focused more on gameplay than flashy graphics, you can actually talk to the creator and they give you feedback and implement player ideas, among other things.

Yeah, it's hard to get some of them interested in it in the first place, but the majority wont download it because they think the client will hurt their computer.

Which it did and can on their computers. I often fail to realize that the average computer has 12 tons of spyware on it :P Every time my one friend downloaded BYOND he'd have to reformat. It's always because some other crap on their computer, though. Another one was scared that the client would do it because she had so much bad luck with .exes in the past.

Which is mostly true. But I suspect that's the case with most game-making systems. Low-quality BYOND games just tend to look extra crappy because BYOND doesn't add much in the way of automatic glitz. You'd really have to work hard at a game it make it look even decently polished compared to most of the other quality games out there. And even with the best efforts, BYOND's limitations still make some games look like crap. :P

I mean, just look at Theodis' Racing Game!
