They really didn't work on it at all during the market test because they didn't want to waste their money if it failed. But since it passed the market test they are now hard at work on it. I'm a graphics designer for the website, and the team has 17 people working on it, so development is for sure going down now.

Knowing how the game market works, I'd say there would probably be something seriously wrong with it if it WASN'T delayed multiple times. :P

:D Everyone's a graphics designer for their site >.<

I also liked their news post about contributing to gwabs.. If I wanted to *make* gwabs, I wouldn't have bought it:D

But that's ok, I'm patient, and don't have good enough internet right now to play at home anyway:)

So does the game actually allow you to still use your desktop and open new windows and such during gameplay? Or is it just a screenshot of your desktop taking at startup that's then manipulated in the game in full screen mode, making it appear to be your desktop when really it isnt?

If its the first I assume they're using Widgets in there like hell.
In response to The Conjuror
I don't think you can move stuff around during gameplay because it would hurt gameplay. However, I do think they use your real desktop because they've made an application like that before, but it wasn't a game. If they use the actual desktop, they can also make better special effects.
Sorry to bump such an old thread, but I'm still waiting for GWABS to release. Any updates anyone? Are they actually developing this or did I waste $10 :P

Also, with the advent of Vista, I wonder how that will affect development.

Yes, it's still in development, but it's much further complete than it was during the market test.

The reason it took so long to start development is that their previous model of crowdsourcing stunted it a bit, and the employee in charge wasn't doing a great job coordinating the few employees/community members gwabs had very well. That's all fixed now, however, with their new project lead and around 8-10 Gwabs employees, development is cruising.

Game updates:

They have chosen the majority of characters and are almost done animating them. They still need to clean the animations up a bit more, add a few things to them, and add a couple more characters.

They haven't added weapons to the game yet because it's last on the list to do, so I'm guessing that will take a little while to get that done since they didn't start making them from the beginning. But I could be wrong, they might be able to complete it in no time at all.

They released a minigame, in case you didn't see my post about it. Go to their website to download it.

Biz updates:

They are going to the Game Developer's Conference (GDC) in march to announce the game and announce their vision of future crowdsourced game development.

They have partnered with Hothead Games, an independent game development company that is owned by the makers of gaming hits such as Simpsons Hit & Run at their previous job, and the current creators of the Penny Arcade Adventures series and an award winning game concept called Swarm.

They are going to talk to Jolt Cola about a sponsorship in March.

I expect a beta release in April, though they expect it in middle to late March.

Also, with the advent of Vista, I wonder how that will affect development.

They will probably have support for it since so many people are switching, even though the majority still have XP. They are going to eventually make it for Mac and Xbox360 as well.

I played said mini-game. I remember reading your blog post about it. From the trailer and screen shots, the game looks like a cool, clean(no real blood and gore was shown) desktop fighting game. Heck, even the screen shot on your blog entry is clean. The mini-game did involve your desktop icons and made little windows for platforms, but what I didn't like what that the objects you bumped into to get points were severed limbs and the like. I distinctly remember a severed baby's head that gave me lots of points.

I'm not saying I don't play games with blood and gore, but its surprising that they don't outright show you it in the screen shots or trailer. The website's front page shows some splatter, presumably blood, between the two characters and on a screen shot it shows some too. Although when you go to the gallery, it's not there anymore, so you might think that's just decoration for the main page. Anyway, I'm simply saying the dark nature of the game seems to be disguised if you don't take their subtle hints (like the skulls in the backdrop on the website).

Er, I didn't see anything...

For what it's worth, I agree with you. They're going to try to push the game to the limits of what's acceptable, and I don't really like that and think if they do that it will be a bit unfair to the people who pre-ordered what seemed to be a clean version and how many people would just prefer one.

So, I'm going to really push them to produce a cleaner version and have that be the main game, though they can make a more mature version, I don't think it should be the central game.

I highly encourage you to send them your feedback on this issue, it's currently a hot debate on the team right now:

That company seems to do that. I think they are a large, organized scam community.

Guys, I talk to the programmers and artists and see the updated source code every week. It's being developed slow because they only have a few developers. Their credits are going have like 10 people total. They're almost done with the beta (for sure, I know because I can see the code now). They are just bad at estimating release dates. They're going through a crunch time right now.

Current developers (to my knowledge):

Greg (programmer)
Mikey (programmer)
Tyler (artist)
Jen (artist)
Herve (artist)

With so few developers, it's not going to be quick and easy.

And Ter13, you obviously haven't spent enough time around them then. They have been more than generous as their RHF site has given out way more than they have taken in still, and even though gwabs hasn't made anything for months (because they aren't advertising at all right now since it's still in development), they still reward the community who helped out each month.

So stop bringing this ancient thread up, please, and direct any questions to me personally.

Can a moderator close this thread please?

I would show you some screenshots but I'm under a hush-hush contract.

Crispy is the one that showed me the site, and Elation was the only one who supported my idea and thought it was great when it was in the contest :P

I think that would be unneccesary. There has not been any news for people that don't know about the game's site so it is a little nice to see that it is (almost) in beta. When do you think it will be finished?
In response to Shlaklava
Its alright if you want to make a new thread, I just don't like my threads to get massive.

I think beta will be out around November. Maybe December if they run into some problems, but the team has moved over to HotHead Games (http://www.hotheadgames.com/gwabs.php), who have a lot of experience in the game industry and will probably get it released sooner.
Ok it's out, two years later.

Sorry for MEGABUMP.

Wow. I think they're a bit too deep in character. When I go to an about page or a FAQ, I expect actual information. Kudos to the team for the presentation extras, but I only know what GWABS is because of Kunark's old posts. They appear to be smoking Pixels from Vixens and Surfer Girls.
