I am not totally sure, but it could be a BIOS problem, your chipsets firmware may not be able to recognize more than 640 Mb of ram. Check with the motherboard's manufacturer and see if they have any reasons.

What Drumls said. You'll need to upgrade your BIOS if it can't support that much RAM. Also, if you have an older computer with DIMM-type RAM (This has nothing to do with DDR and similar), you'll need to place the RAM in order, where larger capacity goes into the first.

I've never heard of a laptop only detecting a specific amount, i've heard of them detecting only 512, 1GB, 1.5 etc but not a specific number.
Try a bios update and if that doesnt work try switching the ram around |
I personally don't think it is a BIOS issue but rather that your system is using the extra ram for something else. You just happen to be 128MB short on RAM. My guess is that windows decided to use this extra RAM for your graphics chip. There is also a small possibility that your 512MB stick has a bad chip on it, but this would be likely to give an error in bootup, so I am not sure if it is that at all.

likely windows didnt decide what to assign. that would be assigned in the BIOS. Look at your graphics settings. If it says 128mb assigned to the graphics card, it's being taken away from your ram;) Lower it if you're not into ram intensive games, or if you haven't noticed a speed increase.

I've seen something like this happen. It's probably assigned to the graphics card. Not that big of a deal. You've got plenty of RAM for your laptop anyway.
