Woo! Go guitarists! Anyways, I'd like to talk about some of the greatest guitarists to ever live. No, Jimi Hendrix isn't one, he's a good guitar player and all, but he has NOTHING on Steve Vai. Then, there's Michael Angelo Batio, people say he's too fast to have any musical talent, but that's crap. Frank Zappa, his music was cool..rofl. Yngwie is good too...^^
Well my red-headed friend is pretty sick at that Guitar Hero game...O.o

Rofl, Guitar Hero is a good game. Until he can beat Bark at the Moon on Expert though, he's not that great..xD

how about the ageless Alex Lifeson of RUSH? been playing for over 30 years, and still going strong!

I don't like Rush too much. Don't get me wrong, they're talented, I just don't like them (and their drummer sucks compared to Slipknots drummer)

Matt Bellamy and his plugin (baby)!
Is your screen name a reference Guthrie Govan? He's an awesome guitarist. John Petrucci is my favorite, but lately I've been getting into Paul Gilbert. Michael Romeo from Symphony X is also among my favorites.

then you obviously don't know much about drumming then. Neil Peart has been accoladed with a numbers of awards, and regualrly voted best drummer in the world in many professional drumming magazines published all around the worldincluding Modern Drummer and Drummerworld.

Shawn "Clown" Crahan of Slipknot plays drums in a clown mask (ok he updated it recently, but still).

there is no comparison to a guy younger than me, wears a mask, and has been only in a professional band since the early 90's, to a man with 30+ years of experience in drumming.

heck even their wikipedia pages differ:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shawn_%22Clown%22_Crahan - roughly 3 'page-downs',
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_Peart - over 13 'page-downs'. a large collection of history and experience.

other good links! http://www.drummerworld.com/drummers/Neil_Peart.html )with mp3 of his music) and http://www.neilpeart.net/

Crahan is talented no doubt, and Slipknot's use of 3 drummers is pretty cool, but you just can't compare Crahan to Peart.

now i *will* agree that RUSH takes some getting used to - Geddy's Lee's voice still grates on my nerves occasionally, when i listen to older tunes, and i've been listening to him since 1976! :)

joey from slipknot is my fav drummer >.> he could own all drummers =D

Joey is who I was referring to. Clown has no real use in the band besides when him and Chris do the military beat on the snares in 'The Blister Exists'

Joey Jordison is one hell of a drummer. Don't mess with a guy who can keep a 32nd note beat. Anyways, despite his speed, he still does great beats and is highly respected for all his skills, even on guitar. Joey sat for four days on his drums, having his wife feed him and give him drinks. He only left to use the bathroom..rofl. That's dedication right there...

How about Tomas Haake of Meshuggah? That guy plays 4/4 with the hi-hat and snare and like, 7/8ths or some other odd time with the kick drum. Not to mention he does it at a pretty fast speed.
Jimi Hendrix > You and all other guitarists

I, personally, am not a guitarist Pop. And Hendrix wasn't really all that skilled. He made good music though, and he took some awesome drugs..rofl.
In response to Govan
Based on your post, I assumed you were one. =P

Still, he ruled. He's number one in my book, as he is in Rolling Stone as well.
In response to Govan
You try playing a right-handed guitar left-handed, that's skill.

Rofl. I still think Steve Vai's 'For the Love of God' should change ANYONES opinion. That song rocks. Download it sometime..(Note: That was not implying to do it illegally, but who said not to besides the government?..rofl)

You must be on some awesomeK drugs if you think Jimmy Hendrix was not a skilled guitarast. He is labled the #1 guitarast no matter where you look. Any big music magazine labels him #1, any big music website labels him #1, any top producer etc. labels him #1. I never even heard of the guitarast you are talking about, and I am huge on music.

Just because you're huge on music means nothing sir. I knew nothing of these guys for a long time, but I think you need to look them up. Here's them and some song names.

Steve Vai - For the Love of God
Steve Vai - Fire Garden Suite
Michael Angelo Batio - Planet Gemini
Michael Angelo Batio - Speed Kills

If you can listen to those songs and say Jimi Hendrix is better than them, then go jump off a damned cliff. Not to be rude or anything :p

This is an arguement I often get into with non-guitarists. Jimi Hendrix was nothing special in terms of technique, or in my opinion, song writing. What he is generally known for is innovation. People quote him as a great guitarist because of the style he created, not because he is a technically proficient player or because he wrote amazing solos.

Personally, I've never been too impressed with him. He is an extremely over-rated player. There are plenty of players out there who have done far more impressive and innovative things than using a wah pedal ;).

Top lists for guitarists don't mean crap, especially those put out by Rolling Stones. They put Kurt Cobain in there, and while I'm sure some of you will beg to differ, Kurt Cobain has no place on a top list for guitar playing. A kid could play guitar for 2 weeks to reach his level of playing. Yet if I recall correctly, Kurt was placed pretty high on that list.
