I'm not exactly too much of an expert on motherboard malfunctions nor am I an expert on BIOS systems and such but for some odd reason, I can't get my On-Board LAN to work anymore. It did at one point, where the light came on and everything when I plugged it in and such. But now, I plug in the cord and the light doesn't even turn on and it doesn't register that a cord was ever plugged into the LAN. I have NO IDEA why this would happen, but my PC won't connect to the internet anymore through dial up either. I've put in several Ethrenets for PCI also, along with several different modems, and all give the same problem.

The Ethrenets won't register a cord being connected to it and the light won't even go on.

The dial up modems disconnect off the internet the second it gets to the last step of dialing.

Everything else works perfectly with no problems whatsoever. The drivers are working fine and they all have the right drivers for it. This happened with my Windows XP Pro edition and still continued after I reformatted the entire PC and even went to Windows XP Home Edition. Think anyone could shed some light on what may have happened and how to fix it without buying an entire new motherboard?
The most-likely case is that there was a surge or something like that that killed your NIC(Network Interface Card). The easiest solution is to buy a new NIC from a local store. Walmart has them around here for $15. They normally come as PCI and are really easy to install. Just open your case(This may or may not void any warranty you have, but if you have one, just send it back for repairs) and slide it in the only spot it will fit(Should be 2-4 PCI slots).

Things like that happen from time to time. Computers are fragile to all kinds of natures elements.

Yeah, a surge would make sense cause one happened and then my modem for dial up stopped working. But the problem is that I've put in another one, along with another dial up modem, and installed both to no avail. The same problem continues.

I'm having some brand new ones sent to me as we speak, but I have this doubt that they will work because the others I've tried to use are pretty new also. I don't plan to waste all my money on this because I'm moving in the next month to a different state. I just want to know if I need to replace the entire motherboard, and if not, what is the problem.

But most likely you are right about the surge and I do appreciate the input! =)

Are you sure it isn't the CAT-5 wire? Or how about the Modem itself? Both of these can die from random causes. As for the 56k problem, it sounds like handshaking is failing. It is most likely a setting somewhere. I really don't know much about 56k anymore.

Even if it was the modem itself, how does that explain me using multiple PCI Ethrenets and they don't work? That's why I ordered a brand new one, just to see if these older ones aren't supported by Windows XP (XP is such a bitch sometimes).

Yeah, I need to find that setting... lol. I don't know dial up that much either.

I didn't mean 56k modem, but rather your DSL or cable modem you are connecting to using the CAT5.

That's what I was talking about too in the first paragraph. I've tried several different ones that plug into the PCI ports and they don't work either but they were older models. I just bought a newer model and am going to see if that works.

I don't know much other than that. Can you explain the CAT5? I'm still learning computers and I bet this bit of knowledge would be quite useful.

The blue cable you plug into the network card.

Mine is black. It's worked for two separate PCs to connect too and even worked in the past for my PC until this issue somehow came up within a month period of time (I'm pretty sure a power surge happened cause I noticed my dial up modem to stop working). lol, we're just used to calling it the cable cord.

(God, I hate double-posting but oh well)

So nobody knows enough about networking and hardware problems for PCs to help me out any? I REALLY don't wanna have to buy an entire new motherboard...

well, you're problem sounds strange. Do those nic cards and modems work in the other computers?

If so, I would almost bet it's a software issue, b/c that'd be really strange for your mobo to not accept any nic card you install.

Try using a bootdisc (or reinstalling windows) and see if your nic cards work on a different OS or clean install of windows.

You may need to get a new motherboard, something simular happened to me.

Basically, a power surge did this somewhere. Anyway, it blew out the USB power control, meaning that not only do the motherboard USB's not work though any other PCI USB won't work, which is really bad and annoying. Luckly we had insurence on electrical damage, so we managed to get a whole new computer out of it, since the motherboard needed to be replaced. We kept the old one and right now I've claimed ownership over it and I'm using right now.

Anyway, it's probably some internal problem, so be ready to contact your insurance company and get a new motherboard. Though ask around a bit more as this may not be the case and I don't really want you to get a brand new motherboard because some guy said to. Anyway, good luck with your problem.
