Here's my problem. We just switched to cable internet. Mediacom, to be exact. We are paying 50 bucks a month for a 5 mb connection. It's running BARELY over a 56k. Not many around our area (a couple people) have this cable. I haven't gotten a chance to route it to my PC but my question is... Is it even worth it? Is there a way to fix this? I really don't wanna call Mediacom because their customer service is worse than AOL. Anyone know any possibilities why my internet may be slow?

Could be your router too.....
By the way, if you live on the west coast I suggest getting "Fiber" Its T3 and I only pay $40 a month for it, the connection speed is 100mps, and on good days I can get anywhere from 3-10mbps. |

Could be that your hardrive needs to be defragmented That doesn't have anything with internet speed. -_- Go check up on your NIC card, your router, and your modem. Find out what's wrong. Once you do, either fix it up or get a replacement. If you're sure it's none of the three, then contact your ISP. |

i been using the same dial up connection for a few years now and its upspeed has gone from 33 to 12kbps and its downspeed from 3.3 to 1.1..
is there anyway to fix this? also my cousin which doesent live 10 mins away with the same connection has almost always 22-30+kbps. thanx |
I got cable 512kb lol!
It works fine for me, no lags at all (unless server side) |

Well technically it could slow your computers ability to process the files its "reading" from the internet into the temporary files.

Unless his computer was made in 1985, that isn't a problem. Most modern computers are capable of storing information in RAM as it is received, queuing it to be put onto the hard-drive when it can. This prevents any delay on the network from hard-drive problems.
The more likely case is A: His ISP is having problems, B: He got a bum modem from his ISP or C: He has a bad NIC or a short in his CAT5 cable. The best suggestion I can give him is to call his ISP, deal with the holding time, and give them an ear full(A polite ear full). |

Well if I defragment my computer it usually runs faster, and I have a gig of RAM, but maybe thats just my hardrive or something lol

Well, we don't have a router yet. Parents want to get a wireless router set, but I'm not too keen on getting it if the internet is gonna run this slow. If it's the modem, I'll have that replaced in a week or so. I know my LAN isn't shorted (at least on that PC, my own personal PC has other issues). Basically, I need to call Mediacom today.
Also, I've done all the spyware, adware, and virus scans. I've got AVG on a corporate level (with no expiration date), Ad-Aware, AND Spybot Search and Destroy. Instead of AVG, would Zone Alarm Pro be better? I have that also, just not installed. Thank you all for the help! I didn't expect this many people to jump on this topic! If there are any more suggestions on what may be wrong, please post them! |

It will run faster if you have a really fragmented slow drive, but it won't make things download faster. The problem is his connection speed, not his whole machine.

Your internet may not be set to sync or be syncing at the correct speed. You should be able to check in your router status page. Don't ask me how but it should tell you in the instructions

I don't have a router, I have a cable modem and that's it. We haven't had to route it to anything yet (at least until I get my Wii).
I checked out the Cable Modem's installation CD, took a look at the manual, everything. Even checked the administrative things. I don't see what is going wrong... Now would be a good time to call Mediacom's Internet Support? |

Get your telecom company to come and check the quality on the phone lines. They can degrade and start getting affected by noise, which causes the speed of your connection to decrease.

AdAware SE (good program to rid adware)
SpyBot Search and Destroy (good program to rid spyware)
Or even worse it may be a virus, I use Avast to get rid of viruses
Hope this helped
