Put it this way, DS has good games but lacks the ability to play mp3's and videos.

There are attachments for the DS to let you use MP3 Any type of video file and exe.

I'm thinkin Mario Kart and New Super Mario Bros.

I've got both and they're pretty good. The thing about New Super Mario Bros is that it's meant for people who are new to Mario as well as veteran players. As a result I've got like 80 lives. It's still very fun, but you'll probably enjoy it so much that you don't put it down and finish it in a few days.
Collecting all the star coins and completing the alternate endings to the levels adds a bit more life to the game. The mini-games are fun but most of them get boring fast.

Mario Kart is really fun. One of the best Mario Kart games to date.

Not yet... The one I want is sold out, so I need to look for another. I'm thinkin Mario Kart and New Super Mario Bros.

Both of those games are awesome. If you would like a game that makes you think, get Phoenix Wright. It starts out easy, but by Chapter 4 and 5, it'll take a few days to complete instead of 30 minutes to a few hours.

Other good games to consider are Animal Crossing: Wild World, Elite Beat Agents, Bomberman World, Final Fantasy 3 and Rocket Slime

Harvest Moon DS is good, and the new Kirby is top notch. Tetris DS is a good time waster. FFIII is good too, real classic feel but nice new graphics, a conversion worthy of the number III. Sad thing is, I play my DS far, far more than I play my PS2, GameCube, or my X-Box(Yes, I do actually own a Microsoft product that I payed for).
I carry my Nintendo DS Lite and -all- of my games with me at all times with little distraction. The main part of a portable system is for it to be portable. With the PSP you have to worry about memory cards, and a cover(since I've heard the screen is very easy to scratch). I put my DS in one pocket, my games and cellphone in the other and I'm off. No fuss. I enjoy to sit at home and play Final Fantasy 3, or Tetris/Aninal Crossing on WiFi. If you're bored and sitting at an office building, pull Tetris out and do a WiFi battle with a friend or a random foe. I've found the DS to be my favorite system to date, even moreso than my PS2. Call me crazy, but I love it.

True that, I just got it as an early Christmas present, and it's AWESOME!!! It's kinda short, but the new abilities are pure AWESOMNESS!!!

FF3 is very confusing. You almost never know where to go next, but that's a good thing! It keeps you thinking, in suspense, and the game takes more then a week to beat, unlike most games.

Now, if you want my 2 cents, here's a run-down of my opinion on game systems:

DS: Focuses more on using your brain, and is targeted to a younger age. (That's why I like it, because all the PSP cares about is it's "Spliter Cell" and "GTA" games.) The games have more life to them, and the DS COMES with awesome features, but with the PSP you usually have to buy hardware for the fricken thing.

PSP: Focuses more on making you spend the last $75 you have in your pocket, just for a stupid thing that you'll use once and never pick up again. It's target age is very high, and such examples are any of the gta series. In other words, I would never pick it up in my life. If I want to play music and movies so bad, I'll go buy a fricken laptop for god's sake and save a couple hundred dollars.

I do the same with my PSP too but you also forgot that you can do homebrewing on a DS also, but I believe you have to buy a flash card to do so.

PSP's can have homebrews and roms as well, in fact I have a 1.5 psp with windows 95 on it, sometimes I switch it around and download the latest games for it, I can keep numerous videos on it, any songs, NES, SNES, ATARI, TURBO-GRAFX 16, etc etc etc.

So can a DS all you need to do is buy ONE thing and your set,
"windows 95 on it," i am not sure about that one the DS but tell me who uses windows on a handheld.. LINUX FTW ON DS atleast then you can try hack wifi hot spots ....

I dunno how serious these members of the gaming community are if they own a handheld and focus on the non-gaming aspects of it.

The wifi on the nintendo DS is extremely basic and doesn't work with regular data transfer, I have one and I took a look at the manual, it was kind of disappointing.

By serious gaming community I meant the older post-grad alumni types that rip apart the coding that sony works on, put together intuitive software for the systems etc. a place that used to be up to date when I first got my PSP was psphacks.net, I haven't been there lately but they had all the latest on homebrews, applications, games, etc.

Also the processing power on the DS is fairly limited, so running linux would most likely be extremely slow and taxing on the processor, oh and PSP's have linux as well >_>.

Point being, Nintendo has always tried to maintain a standard of quality over eye candy, but in recent years their methods have turned into childish incarnations not very suitable for the masses, (Zelda is an exception).

Running linux on the DS is not slow it is fine.
