Another internet question... Sort of

Okay, I found a big issue on this PC. I have Windows XP Service Pack 2 and my computer detects a firewall, saying internet performance is hindered due to it. etc. etc. So I went to Security Center and it said that the security center was turned off and not available, some crap like that. So I searched my PC for a firewall. I can't find one. Windows Firewall is off, and the complete Security Center is shut down. Can anyone explain how to fix this problem? I'm thinking if I install a firewall, it should override whatever it thinks is on here and such.

UPDATE: I tried to install a firewall and see if that would override what it is detecting. Doesn't help AT ALL.

Without more details (like specific wording of any alerts about it you've received, and how they've appeared), it's hard to tell...

However, though I don't know how or why, it strikes me that this might be some spyware trick... Like the one that displays a fake alert that your computer is infected, and then recommends something like, "Download SpYwArE_TeRmInAtOr right now to fix the problem!" (when, in fact, the entire thing is a set up by the people selling that product... they put the spyware into your computer that generates that pop-up)

Again, I'm not sure how this particular angle might turn out to be a scam, but it just sounds like a possibility...

[Edit:] Actually, if this is the case, I now see the motive... They con you into turning off any firewalls you might have running (the program that puts up that alert doesn't even know... they're just shooting in the dark, hoping to hit someone), and then gain access...

you obviously were not too lazy to post on these boards were you? so cut the bull-crap.

from now on, posts of the "i'm too lazy"-sort will be whacked on site if i see them (other mods make take a different approach).

if you are too lazy to do the right thing, or provide the right info, then we are too lazy to respond to it.

in addition, people who whine 'you should do this or that' (especially whining about bmp over png, or 'my thing is betterthan you thing' and arguing about it), may also have their posts whacked to. this ain't a chatroom*. if you want to help, do so. otherwise move along and stop wasting forum-space and our time cleaning up after you.
