Why can't I put my dwarves into the ocean? It's what any sane leader would do. Plenty of water and wildlife. 3D environment allows for more creative design. Seriously.

Someone needs to do a fortress game where you have multiple playable races so you can have an underwater race.

Maybe once taverns are in you can get some dwarves drunk enough to embark on an ocean, and then someone will write a song about it.
