They tell you to leave it on 24/7, as it's key to them winning the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray Battle. The PS3 includes a lovely little device that beams subliminal messages directly to your brain. Don't believe me? Something on it was even posted here about it a while back if I remember correctly.

I have heard many of the arguments about why the PS3 is not worth its price, but I have yet to see one that could hold water

I look at it like this. How many PS2 games do I own? How much will a PS3 game cost? How much will a PS3 cost me?

I have 12 games for my PS2. PS3 games will start out at around a hundred dollars here. That will go down over the life of the console, so I'll say that it averages out to about $70 a game. The PS3 (with all the extra junk I'll buy) will probably set me back around $1,200.
I'm not interested in non-gaming aspects of the console. If blu-ray takes off I'd buy a dedicated player whether I have a PS3 or not.
12 * $70 = $840. $1,200 + $840 = $2,040. $2,040 / 12 = $170. So that's $170 per game. Pretty steep. If the games continue along the standards set by the PS2 they wont be worth that much to me (which seems to be the case, why mess with what works for them?). That said I'm a tool so I'd probably buy one anyway.

The thing that sold me on Blu-ray over HD-DVD is that the Blu-ray standard requires support for Java in every playback device. It's primary purpose is for better menus than the piecemeal pictures used for menus in DVD and HD-DVD formats, but I think this will lead to many more innovations.

Most modern gaming consoles double for a DVD playback machine. Now your standard Blu-ray playback machine can double as a gaming platform. (It won't be as graphically or audibly stunning as dedicated gaming platforms, but with 50GB I can have my movie, all the usual extra features, AND some very immersive gameplay.)

Does it add to the value of a PS3? I don't think so. It's just Sony's attempt to catapult Blu-ray into more living rooms, and they are killing their gaming platform to do it.

Make that $130, Dark. All games in the next generation have gone up in price, in general - well, at least the multi-console ones.

It might be a good idea to state AUD when you use the $ sign. As I understand it, very few countries use $, the largest being the USA. So it does create some problems when someone assumes that you mean $100USD, instead of $100AUD. The price is different, so it needs to be pointed out.

The games have gone up, at max, $10USD per game(Not much, considering PC games have been this price for a while). As for "extra junk", I don't know what you are talking about. The PS3 supports so many standard devices that you no-doubt already have in your house that you shouldn't have to buy anything new. On top of that, it supports most PS2 USB devices, so you can keep your old stuff. The only "Extra" I can see you buying is a few more controls(Supports up to 7, although I haven't seen a game support more than 4 so far). Besides, how are you going to spend ~$430AUD(Assuming that the direct price change from the PS3 $600USD to $770AUD is correct)? I just can't see anything costing that much.

Also, are PS3 games are at max $60USD, which calculates to $76AUD, far from that $100AUD mark you mentioned.

Perhaps they are increasing the price for you guys by ~30%, but otherwise, your price points are way off. And it is generally a good idea to mention which currency you are using. I attempt to at least put USD in my posts involving money once.

Well you're technically right. Wii games still cost $50 but its not next gen; its current gen and new gen.

The price I've been given is $1,100 for the full console. Games are generally $100-$130 near launch. The extra junk I'm talking about are a second controller and memory card converter.

We pay a lot more than just the USD to AUD conversion rate. I'd assume that we get stuck with importing fees and taxes you don't. It's very annoying.

Games that are for the Wii and other consoles are also $130 or so here. They've gone up in price.

(Mind that it's AUD, not USD)

GST, for one.

Another example, Ter - the Wii cost $400 here. Direct conversion would make it around about $330 or so, from memory. Basically, gaming stuff costs more in Australia.

(I thought the PS3 was at $1000, rather then $1100? Regardless, it's ridiculously expensive)

I have mixed feelings about this.

On the one hand: A standardised programming language in every Blu-ray device? Awesome!

On the other hand: Java in every living room. Ewww. Like Sun needs more world domination than they already have. =(

I may be thinking of the price it was set at when they were going with the pre-Christmas launch.

Ha. They're probably in cahoots with the electric companies. There's no need to leave a gaming console on 24/7.

Sure, you may not be interested in it, but calling it a waste of money is just wrong.

I rather pay $50 more and get a Wii & a 360 which can do all the PS3 can and more.
My only thought of the PS3 is: $600 Paper weight.

but neither is the Wii.

There's probably two reasons the PS3 is doing so horrible on the market right now.

1) The price tag is ridiculous.

2) Sony finally angered it's fans, practicing the same bull three times in a row.

I don't think the PS3 will EVER be worth the price tag. The only reason I'll want one is Metal Gear Solid 4, and possibly Final Fantasy 13. Otherwise, it's like a spiffy PS2. The Nintendo Wii already has many great games out on it, and the largest game lineup. I'm upset because I still can't get one.

There have been more Wii consoles shipped to the US than the PS3 last month, and Gamestop says they get a handful every week and they sell out in less than an hour. Every retail store here has at -least- 2 PS3s in stock. It's pathetic, but I think Sony is getting what it deserves for false hope.

You guys totally need to get your economy sorted out. :p

Wii and other console games cost 78.3837 USD over here- 101.507 AUD.

Blame John Howard. Mr. "I'll never put a GST on stuff!" goes and implements a GST.

...And then he gets voted in again next election. My god, why are my countrymen so stupid?
