Without any intention of sounding rude whatsoever, I dare asking you this: did you have to deal even once with a handful of people who had to go through their lives with such a mental aliment?
I've done some volunteer work a couple of years ago for such a cause, and trust me, someone who's at such a low point cannot think in a manner that's rational enough to even consider that taking their leave might even faze anyone.
When you're at a point when your pattern of thinking comes to "Why should I ask for help and annoy them with my sh*t?", you don't wonder if your departure will hurt other people. That's why those who volunteer for that cause need to show them that nobody is useless.
I have to admit I felt a bit offended when I read that you thought of it as nothing but an act of cowardice. There's a difference between cowardice and desperation. While I most certainly agree that suicide is no solution to anything, I understand what can drive a man to such extreme measures, and it's not laziness, nor is it a lack of drive/motivation, or any fault of such nature. Those are merely consequences, not causes.
There is one thing, though, for which I have no pity, and that is the glorification of such feelings through trends. Yes, I am talking about those who are extremists adepts of that "emo" movement.
They can have their "dress code", no problem. They're completely entitled to have their hair however they see fit. They can listen to whatever music they want, I cannot object to that in any way. However, when they get "pseudo-depressed" because it's what their "social clique" do, that I do have a problem with. But I won't elaborate, since I'm biased on the matter.
