Are we allowed to publicly discuss features that we find, or document procs with what we know about them. For others to use?

I suspect that full documentation will be released with the imminent public beta, so if you begin a documentation effort just keep in mind that it will probably become redundant as soon as the beta hits the greater BYOND developer community.

I wouldn't necessarily say "imminent". The word Tom and Lummox JR have been using is "soon". =) Imminent is possibly too strong a word. (I could be wrong; I don't know exactly how close they believe they are.)

It might be soon, if you go by the current state of the beta. But then again, it might be horribly buggy and we can't tell that.
It's best to say, it'll be here when it is here. |
good, because ive spent in excess of 10 hours adding content that works for only 4.0 and all the players of my game are like whens fourpointo out dan?! I shouldnt have created hype for an update i cant bring them.

Imagine what would happen if something doesn't work out during testing and something has to get scrapped or rewritten entirely, and your stuff doesn't work in the public 4.0? Wouldn't it suck to see your 10 hours of work amount to nothing? Because, you know, as a closed beta product, 4.0 is subject to change as much as it was when it was a concept on notebook paper. If a better idea comes along or one idea just doesn't work out at all, it's very easy for something to just get erased and scribbled over. Hiead |

I shouldnt have created hype for an update i cant bring them. Well, we're at the stage with the beta where significant features are not much in flux. That is, most of the control parameters, etc. are not changing or being deleted, though a couple have been added. We're basically only fixing bugs right now. While a public release is probably not imminent (as in this weekend), it's probably somewhere between imminent and soon. Lummox JR |

Well, as Tiberath said, chances are that the bugs are already known. We'd prefer to avoid duplication, so up until the release you might want to just jot those down on virtual paper somewhere until the public release comes; if they still exist in the public release, feel free to report them, but until then no one is really equipped to handle the reports. Besides all that, many people don't report their BYOND versions very well -- the powers that be might get 3.5++ bug reports and 4.0 bug reports from people who don't actually say what version they're using. =P More than that, when it comes to 4.0 we've been doing a lot of minor builds, which means the major version is still 363, but the minor version is currently at 932. Right now I'm awaiting a release of 933 so we can get some of our bug reports retested to see if they've vanished. So it's been important in this process to report the whole BYOND version, which is a foreign concept to the average user. Lummox JR |

This is probably soon to be moot, though.
