Not ten minutes ago, my computer randomly turned off, and I don't know why. I turned it back on, and when I put in my user password, it came up with a message about how it can't load up my user account, and then logged me into the default account setting. This really screws me over, because all of my programs I was working on were placed on the desktop. Does anyone have any idea on how to go about retrieving them?
Is your previous account still present in C:/Documents and Settings/ ? (Assuming you're using Windows)

Yes.

You should be able to go in to it and retrieve anything of value from the desktop in case the problem could not be solved immediately (unfortunately, I don't know what to suggest beside doing that):

C:\Documents and Settings\[Account Name Here]\Desktop

The desktop directory isn't there.

Well, that's some bad news... I can not think of anything you can do, sorry :/ Maybe someone else with more experience will post by soon as what to do.

is it possible, while in the other account, to 'switch users' wihtout logging out?

and what OS are you using?

No, but the desktop folder has already dissapeared and been automatically replaced. I think I'm essentially screwed now.

Windows XP.

Why not try and make a new acount (make sure its an admin) and remove the password on your main acount?

Have you tried a system restore? I'm not sure if user accounts come under the 'vital system files' sort of approach it takes, but it's probably worth a shot.
