Hey all you D&D nerds, whip out your modules and rule books, i've got a question about climbing and the item used to modify climbing, pitons.

Now, I know pitons take a minute to install normally, but I have +17 on my climb check at 4th level, wicked, i know. Anyways, I know that minute can be moved to 30 seconds with a DC 10 or 15 check, which wouldn't even matter for me. Though, isn't there a DC 20 or 25 check that allows you to install them in a round and free action, or something? I just need this double checked.

There's an epic battle coming up, and I can't gamble falling with a DC 25 which would be lowered to 8, i'd much rather have it at 3. So, my course of action would be modified to sneak in and install, pre-battle if this was an issue.

Thanks for reading, all answers are appreciated.

I don't think I remember installing anything in dnd.
I had a 31 to jumping in our last campaign with my LizardFolk Barbarian.

Pitons, are like insta footholds.

Ah, well then, I'm guessing if you rolled your 10 to 15 which as you put it, the item should do what its made for. I mean, that IS how it works....
Unless your DM thinks his linear plot is too good for your creative thinking... that bastard...

Insta meaning 1 minute normally, then DC checks for quicker installment. That's 10 rounds, no way i'm going to sit through 10 rounds of inacction when I can shoot using precision shot. It would just be nice to have a +8 BaB for two arrows a round as opposed to +5.

usually the best source of help would be the DM in your campaign or adventure where the pitons would be used. he/she/it can decide how best to determine chances of success/failure far simplier than going through the rigamarole of stat mod'ding.

some of the best D&D sessions i've taken part in (as player and DM) used the least amount of number-juggling and dice rolling.
