Hey guys -- I'm having this really, -really- annoying problem with my computer. It seems to have great difficulty recognizing my new cable box; but the strange thing is, is that I'm hooking up "teh interwebz" via an ethernet cord. Very often if you hook up something through an ethernet cord it's usually "plug-in-and-play". However, when I hook my ethernet cord up to the router it simply doesn't even recognize a LAN connection at all! I go to the "Network Connections" folder and there isn't even a single LAN connection option in there; a blank slate if I do say so myself.
I'm currently using a MOTOROLA SBV5220 SURFboard Cable Modem. All lights and functions are working normally; it even detects the ethernet link. So I talked to some support junkie over at Time Warner cable and he told me that I do not even have a driver for something call an "Ethernet Controller". He told me that is what is responsible for my computer identifying a LAN connection and he told me to update it and it'll fix the problem right away.
Sounds like a simple procedure, eh? Wrong. When I go to update my driver it simply says something along the line of "couldn't find the necessary software to install" so I can't update it! I click the information button and it tells me that has -no information at all- about it. Then I learn that I don't need to update the driver -- I have to download a whole new one because for some reason my messed up PC detects a driver but then turns around and says there isn't one there. I try countless programs to help me get a driver for this (some of which I had to hack up cash to get booted) but they all failed miserably -- stating the same reason as above.
So, guys, I turn to you to help. This cable modem is clearly kicking my arse and I need a technical guru to lend me a hand so I can win this battle. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, guys!

Not quite, it's not the cable box itself that's at fault. It's the LAN card in his computer, he'll need to figure out what kind of network card it is and locate drivers for it online. The easiest way to do that is to open the computer and read what's written on the card, if the card came with the system you can also search for system specs and find it there.

Thank you so much, Nadrew! From your information, I opened up my PC and jotted down the ID # from the ethernet modem thing and opened up good ole' google and searched for results. On the very first search I found the answer to my problem and updated my driver and now it's working flawlessly! Thanks again for the help you two. |

Good to hear, it's always nice when it turns out easy. Gotta love Google, it's the best for finding drivers, in my opinion.

also, sounds like even the old one wouldnt of functioned properly if it is like that on ur computer, so if thats the case that it wont even run from the old box anymore, or ur comp does something weird after unplugging it or w/e, u would have to go online, find ur product there, and click drivers download, and then install that.
its actually very easy.
Time Warner Cable site >> find list of products >> click driver download >> install drivers via automatic install function of the .exe listed there.
