Well see, I'd technically be a nazi if I didn't write atleast one review for a PS3 downloadable game after writing a review for a Wii downloadable. Soooo...
K so a couple days ago I had to update the PS3... twice. Yeah its not very fun. I hear 360 updates can be even worse but I wouldn't put my money on it. After being notified that Flow, which I had considered buying earlier this year, had been reduced to 5 USD, I snatched it up and its expansion pack.(So it was a total of 8 bucks but thats better than paying 11)
When I first started this game I said to myself, "Well this is total [I like dirty words a lot!]. Why did I buy this?" It was just that simple and weird. The controls are different and so far, I haven't seen anything on the Wii like it. Yeah thats right, you tilt the controller to move your little protozoa. Amazuhzing!... In all seriousness. Its only partially a ripoff of the Wiimote and it'd probably work better if it was a wheel controller. But whatever.
The basis of the game is that you're a protozoa and you need to eat other creatures to get bigger so you can get further down into an abyss and defend yourself from meaner nasties. If you can get to the bottom of the Abyss you unlock a new egg and you'll be taken to the title screen. As far as I can see, the food that you eat can make you look different depending on what base creature you are. Don't expect any amazing mutations though.
So after feeling like I had wasted five bucks, the second night I was determined to crack the game beneath the simple surface. So basically, I ran for every level advancement I could find. Eventually, I got to the bottom and found an egg... thing..... So it took me back to the title screen, changed the background, and turned me into a Jelly fish! Yay :D! This really is another game that you'd want to play with your friends and not alone. I've beaten the whole game now and well, I'm kinda sad it was so short D:. Its definitely not anything you've ever seen before. The Dynamic Diffuculty Adjustment constantly keeps the game at a moderate diffuculty no matter how 'skilled' you are at the game so it can become dull if you play it for too long in one spurt.
Overall, I'm unsatisfied with flOw. Not because its so different and weird but because its just too short even with the expansion. If you plan on getting flow get it so you can play it with some friends because otherwise you might find yourself regretting buying it. I personally didn't after I discovered there was some depth but well, come on, its me, the Sony Nerd~
Peace out,
~Warlin

Yeah its not very fun. I hear 360 updates can be even worse but I wouldn't put my money on it. We get updates on a quarterly basis. It's a pain to have to wait for small updates that could easily be released on their own, but on the plus side when they finally do drop they're pretty stable. Both systems have their advantages, but we're past the 'oh crap, we should have added that in the original' stage and none of the new features are incredibly impressive. The upgrades are nice, but they're barely worth even the minor discomfort of downloading them. So stability matters. Not that anyone is getting a particularly bad deal. Free new features. =P |
I've yet to buy the expansion, but it was great fun to me. I've played through the entire game(with all the creatures, and the credits stage). My mom enjoyed the game as well. The simple controls worked out well for her. I didn't much like the tilt controls, and would have rather used a stick, but it is an understandable choice by the designer. It's a great example of where Sony is trying to take the PSN. They are trying to innovate, but not in the normal way. Calling All Cars was a bit of a disappointment. The gameplay was new and fresh, but it was frustrating and I was never able to win online.
I'm still kinda waiting on that killer PSN title. Warhawk could have been it, but it's really a retail product thrown into a download service. There are some games coming that I'm looking forward to, but only time will tell if they are worth the wait. |

You can set the Xbox 360 up to have this thing kind of like the Nintendo Wii, where it will download and install updates even if the system is off. I don't think I ever had to sit around waiting for a update to install. On the flip side, almost every Xbox 360 update has something worth waiting for.

Does that check for updates even when the console isn't fully powered up? Now you bring it up I'm sure I turned it on, but the last few updates I know I've powered up the console to be greeted with the 'dashboard needs an update' message. Perhaps it waits until it's turned on to install them.

You can tell when your Xbox 360 is doing something in sleep mode, because only the center dot will blink. I don't know if it just downloads the updates, or installs it as well or what.

Yeah I know what you're talking about. It does it with the play and charge kit. I'm paranoid about it overheating so I'm always watching to make sure that it's not blinking (even though in theory that means it's doing minimal work and the fans are running).

When I leave my PS3 on for updates or downloading addons to games I usually turn off all of the controllers, unplug the keyboard, and take out the PS2memory card adapter. >.> <.< Yeah its 600$ worth of investment. If it explodes I'm probably going to cry for a very long time. Expecially since I just downloaded the expansion to Oblivion~

I think the PS3 is safe to leave on. They designed it to run 24/7, and I've left mine on for several days at a time before.

A $600.00 machine shouldn't overheat and it shouldn't explode. If either of those things happened, I think you would have the right to complain and get a new system free of charge. Even if your 90 days was up on it, I would hope whoever paid for the system was enough to buy a extended warranty on it.
When I bought my PS3, I bought a extended warranty for it from EBgames. It broke in less then a week, but I had to wait another to go back since I live an hour and a half from the closest EBgames. When I got there, the guy I originally bought it from was working there, he knew me, and he also knew I couldn't always make it to their store. When I exchanged systems, he gave me a free extended warranty. Apparently when you buy a warranty, it only applies to one exchange or repair and then you have to get a new one. Because mine broke so soon and I was such a good customer he gave me another warranty free of charge. Also, on a side note, Oblivion is overrated. I had the game, plus most of the expansions you could download on Xbox Live. I didn't care for it all that much. It was fun at the beginning, but at the end it felt like a chore to play. |

GASP! BLASPHEMY!
You're a sinner! Oblivion is the sexiest RPG in existance. I any case, the PS3 version came with most of the updates that were required to be downloaded for the XBox version so the wait was well worth it.(Well it was missing shivering isles but I guess the fixed that right?) Also, My PS3 runs fine and I'm not sure how you could drive your PS3 to break in the first week. If it did, it was defective anyways. I'm just paranoid and I have been diagnosed with severe anxiety. Everything makes me worry. So its normal for me to care about every little detail. Sony also fixed alot of the freezing problems and my PS3 hasn't frozen up for about a month in a half now. I'd hate to say its the 'ultimate console'. It is missing alot but I still think Sony is getting a bad rap for its less than agreeable price. Sure its expensive but when you add it all up, your game library will probably triple that price anyways so why is it such a big deal? |

The one that you can find in stores. You know, the one with the games that are fun to play and stuff?
Look, the good exclusives for the PS3 aren't here yet(Well some of them are like Rachet and Clank) but don't think we are, by any chance, missing any of the action. Smart developers won't be bought into making games exclusive when they know they can make more money on both consoles if they take an extra month to convert the code to PS3 format. Besides, if my PS3 sucked ass so much then how could I be wasting 6+ hours of my life on it every day? That just doesn't seem all that possible. |

The fact is the PS3 doesn't have anything right now besides the blu-ray player that is setting itself apart from the Xbox 360. Some of the games that both systems share even play better on the Xbox 360 because the developers still aren't exactly comfortable with the way the PS3 works yet. Poor frame rates and under produced graphics in a powerhouse of a machine that is supposed to consume it's competitors isn't a good thing by a mile.
Don't try to use any exclusives as a reason why or a reason why not the system is doing well, because one or two games are not what is going to make or break a system. the fact is, the PS3 has been a disappointment to a lot of people from day one. And I, by no means speak for everyone, because obviously every system is going to have it's fans, but I am not the only person who feels this way, and it isn't just gamers, it is the industry as well. Smart developers won't be bought into making exclusives huh? Or, oh wait, you mean, Sony is too cheap to pay for exclusives and expects developers to just hand them exclusives for free. Because that has been a problem with a number of titles that were originally supposed to be exclusives. Also, the system might suck ass, but have you considered you might too? I mean, if you spend 6 hours a day playing video games, I mean, that is a pretty crappy life style right there. |
