Thinking of the many games that I tried I came across some games that I absolutely loved, but no one I recommended them to had even heard of the game to begin with.
What games have you played that were like that?
I've got a few, some might actually be more popular than I've speculated though.
Bahamut Lagoon- Only released in Japan for the snes, yet one of my favorites. I suggest it to any fans of RPGs and tactical games. There is not one person that I have talked to about this game which knew that it even existed.
Cima, The Enemy- One of those games that was very good, but just never sold for the GBA. I suggest it to anyone that likes tactical games.
Crystalis- Very old game for NES. This game might be more popular than it seems to me, but this was probably my second favorite RPG on the NES excluding Final Fantasy. Incredible game for its time.
What do you guys have?

Beyond Good & Evil and Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, definitely.
|
I'll steal Alathons idea and go with Tecmo's Deception. Picked it up a few days ago, and I already love the concept.

Blood will Tell for the ps2
|
Kirby Air Ride. I got it in third grade, but I spent tons of hours playing it; something about the one game mode had an addicting quality to a 9 year old.

Heh, funny thing is, these are all games I was going to mention -
1.) Tecmo's Deception (PSX) 2.) Crystalis (NES) 3.) Star Tropics (NES) 4.) Rainbow Islands (Arcade or NES) 5.) Tales of Scheherazade (NES) 6.) Tombs and Treasures 7.) Shadowgate (NES, Turbo GFX CD, N64) 8.) The Uninvited (NES) 9.) Mother series (NES, SNES, GBA) These are all games that were impossibly hard for me, but I spent so much time playing them it wasn't funny. |
Some I know include Outwars (Microsoft Game that was actually fun to play) and War Wind in terms of PC games. :P
There might've been others I played that are generally unknown. That is all I currently have to list until I remember more of them. |
I hated War Wind so much. I got it in a bargain bin a few years back for $5.00 and installed it on my old DOS laptop and couldn't get it to work properly for the life of me.

Gore- A generic fast paced FPS that really was a ton of fun. The balance was dead on, and gameplay went at an almost perfect pace.
Armadillo's Run- A really fun indie game that was completely physics based. It kinda started a genre, but I rarely ever hear it mentioned. BlastCorp- I think that was the name. It was an N64 game that was a lot of fun and really hard. I've met few others that have played this, but I really think it deserves some credit. Radracer- For the NES, it was really awesome because when you pressed select, it went 3D! And by 3D, I mean it separated the reds and the blues, so if you had 3D glasses you could feel like you were really in the car! I never had 3D glasses, but as I kid I kinda thought the game would be super realistic if I put some on. |

Yeah, it was a fun game but the difficulty was wildly varied to the point where using some of the vehicles or the suits just was stupidly frustrating. I went to play it the other day but realized that I had traded it in. Whoops. Radracer- For the NES, it was really awesome because when you pressed select, it went 3D! As you flip over and roll endlessly and then watch as the game slowly puts you back onto the road while the time ticks away. Maybe I can make it to the checkpoint. Nope, almost, if only you hadn't wasted a minute crashing... |
*plane - 2d square
Cubivore - Weirdest game idea ever. You're start out as a cube or a section of a cube(can't remember) and you eat other cubes or planes and eventually face a boss in which after wards your cube mates and you play as the next generation of you which is bigger and stronger. Eventually you get more and more body parts such as horns or more planes that connect to your body. Its kinda like going from a snake to a dog. Eating the other cubes was the best part because if they had more than a few planes attached, you had to rip and eat each part by thrashing the thumb stick back and forth. |

I never had that much problem with difficulty until I started going after Platinum times. I remember spending days shaving seconds off my time. I'd love to see Rare bring it back. The Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts engine should be able to form the base of it easily enough. Even if they just made a simple 2D Arcade game they could easily pull it off. Either way it would be a DLC cash cow. You could get away with a pack of a 50 maps every month without putting much effort in. |
The Syndicate series was pretty well known at the time, but now its pretty much forgotten. If Bullfrog wasn't gathering dust in the EA warehouse I'd honestly attempt to buy the rights and revive the series.
Another one is Mega Man Legends. Not so much an obscure title as an under-rated one. At the time I was used to RPGs being turn-based, and Mega Man being a side-scroller. The idea of a Mega Man real-time action RPG blew my mind. Street Rod II. Back when racing games were just doing laps this game had you tuning your engine, buying/selling parts, betting money/cars on races and cruising around town. The parts weren't just 'increase speed stat' either. It was based around real cars and real parts. If you wanted to use a supercharger you had to have the correct engine for that model supercharger. If you wanted to use a set of carbs you had to have the right manifold for them to go on. Really, the racing was just trimming on a mechanic simulator. |
Chrono Trigger is definitely not unknown. Any RPG fan knows that games and loves it. So it's still an awesome game. As for warioware...I can't tell you how long I saw advertisements in the game store for that game coming out. I knew about it for awhile and still know about it but never bothered to buy it still. I guess it depends if other people decided it was worthy to buy.

Megaman Legends is a great Megaman game and to the Megaman community it is surely not unknown, but to others it might be. If you're not a Megaman fan, yeah it's definitely a game to check out regardless.

Grandia II - Really changed my attitude towards RPG games, loved it.
Settlers 3,4,6 - Wonderful RTS, with nice multiplayer options. Sad that it only got a little notice since settlers 6. I.M.MEEN - The very first action game I ever played. True, it was an educational game but most of that was ruled out by puzzle solving and fighting. It was quite a mysterious game also. A great game for DOS. Roller Coaster Tycoon - Playing this game was like living one of my dreams. Building a theme park, moderating it, making scenery. It was all very good fun. Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy - It was quite a shame that this game was not known very much. A very nice demonstration of how to do an action-adventure in the early eras of MMX 3D Prince of Persia 3D: Though an official game of the actual series, this game was not known well by most. The graphics are beautiful in their own aspects and the gameplay is very addictive. Changed my gaming style forever, this one. Some educational DOS games also fill this list, Like Sir Addalot and (I think its name was ) Bears day out. |
