Hey,

I'm learning Java. Does anyone have any good sites or books I should check out to learn the language? I'm pretty good at learning by myself from just reading several tutorials, so if you guys have any articles, development sites/forums, or book names that'd be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Joh

Or, you can always purchase a book/tutorial.

Maybe ask on, um, a Java forum? 0_o

A microsoft book on Java? I didn't know he was looking to learn C#.
Look at Sun's own Java tutorials. They have lots of great stuff. However, now that Oracle bought out sun and they haven't changed all the content over to oracle.com, some of it is on Sun's old domain and some is on Oracle's domain.

When Googling that stuff up, try Googling for both the keyword tutorial and also for trail. Some of their Java tutorials they call "trails" instead of tutorials.

Also, I wrote up some stuff a while back which may or may not be helpful to you.

I didn't realize that it was against the rules to ask the community I started in if they had experience. -_- Of course I've done reasearch, next time don't say anything if you don't have anything productive, I just wanted to hear input from a community I'm familiar with.

Onto the more constructive and helpful responses, I appreciate the ideas and I'll definitely check them all out. I downloaded a few e-books and am cross-referencing between them, as well as highly making use of the Stanford courses. Thank you very much!

Go purchase a Java book, or ask in a Java forum. Better yet, find someone's post that has already asked about learning Java.

Orange, how would you know if he tried Google or not? You are not monitoring his computer. (If you are then I apologize and he should invest in a trojan removal.) He would ask such a question here, because this is the place to ask such a question, granted he could have used the search feature and found loads of information, but linking to sites like lmgtfy instead of directly Google is more of a taunt than anything. BYOND is a community that many people start from, and most people who start here accomplish nothing, at least he is making an attempt at accomplishing something. You don't need to know DM to learn Java, or C++, or any of the more in-depth programming languages, you could be a master in DM and be a failure in Java / C++

I don't think it's laughable, or foolish for him to ask for help. He could have searched, as mentioned earlier, but he's better off asking now, and learning than staying quiet and not doing anything at all.
