How do i know what to set the port on when hosting a world? Does it matter?

Usually, the best way to avoid conflicts is to choose port 2000, 6000, or 6667. Those ports are pretty much guaranteed to be open. The official list is here: IANA port assignment list. |

Not much. If you're running anything separate, though, like IRC or ICQ, you might have conflicts with the ports through which those are open. Under most circumstances though, you have about a 1 in 10000 chance of picking a used port! Usually, the best way to avoid conflicts is to choose port 2000, 6000, or 6667. Those ports are pretty much guaranteed to be open.
If you let it choose a port for you, then register that world, it will choose an empty port and tie in the registered name to your IP and port. You'll be assured of never having conflicts.
