well, we would only be the leader of each area not all. and pretty much just an overseer to ensure things are going in the right direction.
|
. . .Can you all get out of here with all the negativity? I've seen enough in the last pages, if you don't believe in the project, than that's that. But no need to continue commenting, noting the progress (or lack of, rather)

Well, without a project manager and not even the original poster wanting to manage the project... Project will fail. That's not an opinion even, without a manager it 'will' fail. While everyone understands this already, unless you're here to contribute.... |

Id be more than willing to be the project manager if no one has anyone else they'd like to see do it. We have enough interested people here already that we can get SOMETHING rolling. Anyone who feels like we can actually do some good, send me a personal message and we can trade emails. Let's get this team together and begin work on a concept at least.

Anyone who replies to that will be replying directly to you. No one will see what is said. Just making sure you know.

I don't know how serious this is, but anybody talking about doing this should probably watch these videos by Extra Credits, and then watch everything else that Extra Credits has.

Considering i'm the only one who has taken the initiative to take names gathered here and actually do something with them, then since now. I'm not sure I saw your name on the list of members or have even seen anything but negativity from your corner. I believe this is exactly what Xirre was talking about when he posted this. Some people can do nothing but see the negative. Yes. Ive taken it upon myself to build a team from the names gathered on this post, as almost everyone involved has stated we need some sort of leadership. Leaders take initiative and do what needs to be done instead of bitching about what others are doing. Don't care to join my team? Not a big deal. I'm doing SOMETHING. Trying to build ANYTHING. And albro1: I know. It's just a way to exchange emails to get things rolling. If you are still interested in doing Concept Art, by all means, let me know. |
I'm still down for it in my spare time. Paid work is always going to be higher on my priorities, of course.
|
Of course. Cool. I'll add you to the list and send you a message when we are finally ready for our first team meet and greet.

If anything needs to be changed in the OP, somebody reply telling me to do so. Such as me missing a message from you saying you want to partake in a certain role.

I am willing to donate whatever code I've generated from my project, which'll probably never be finished if it's just me working on it. I can provide the original concept for the project, but I haven't touched much of anything in it since before 5.0. Still, if it could be found useful, even a small bit of it: I'll donate the game. Under the condition that, if the final result of the game ends in a similar result to my concept, I get to put my unfinished project's name on it.
I could sound like an idiot, since I only read the first and last few posts on this thread. |
Well its going ok for the amount of organization its taking, we are using IRC to communicate and we are designing all the scenes and story etc. and what gameplay elements we will want. it took a while to find the people for this and to organize who will do what, once we have all our ducks in a row creation can begin.

Not to be a negative nancy, but I really feel like if you want to make a single player game you should use a different engine. BYOND was made to make online multiplayer games in a time when they weren't yet a "thing" -- it's really not the optimal language for a single player game.
If you ask me, the best use of the BYOND engine (assuming you're shooting for the PC crowd) would be a large, open-world roleplaying game. Three of the top games on this platform are (whatever they're calling DB: Finale to avoid copyright infringement these days), Eternia, and (the big one) SS13. All of these are RP games, and routinely draw more players than any other genre or game on BYOND, including NEStalgia which I would argue currently has the most polish, as well as media attention. This is a very niche programming language and if you're not using it to fill a niche, you're kind of missing the point. |

They're drawing that small niche, not drawing a bunch of new players to the community. If a game is to be made properly in this, I would argue anything, but the status quo here. Of course, with the proper marketing, any game can be a hit.

Well said.

I actually think single player games aren't a bad way to go, so long as you're cognizant of the fact that you'll need to appeal to the retro crowd to gain any measure of success.
Take a game like Regressia for example: By BYOND's standards it was a raging success. Like all polished BYOND games though, it received it's requisite amount of praise for a while, then faded into the background- likely only generating a bit of subscription revenue by word of mouth around the community during its height of popularity. I really have no idea about this, but I'd be shocked if it made anything more than 1,500 dollars during its entire lifetime. I believe that if that game was released on Steam today as a pay to play game while utilizing the standalone client, it would probably make thousands of dollars within just a couple of months. And with regular sales, that those figures would likely not diminish over time. Cheap, simple, fun, and complete. That's all you really need to be successful. BYOND is limited in what it can do, but if that's what you're comfortable making games with there's no reason to not go forward with trying to market something. Even if it's a simple single player title. Top down multi player action RPG's are the "big draw" as BYOND games in terms of player count. But we need to move past where we use those as a measuring stick for success and what is important to strive for. Heck, even if you don't want to go out of your action RPG comfort zone, I guarantee making something like a single player Zelda style clone with the same sort of gameplay (but much more polish) as those bloated multiplayer BYOND DBZ style games, could generate 100 times more profit outside of BYOND. Even if your precious hub page shows no players, your bank account will likely tell another story. Obviously I would be a fool though to say "Don't make multiplayer games on BYOND!" That's a huge reason for pretty much anyone at all to be here in the first place. I just envision that if done correctly, single player could be pretty viable as well. |
