How do i do 24/7 hosting on a web site?

dont flame me if i just asked something stupid but how can i host over a web site and also if i can would it have to be on a site that im paying for like my mom owns a site or can it be on a free website like geocities cause they give 3gb bandwidth for a month and only 1 hour down time if u go over it plz help but plz dont get to technical

Just get like freewebs or geocities to host your website...Its 24/7 cept for if they have downtime

On geocities or other sites like that, you cant host games off of. You need a server that (preferably) allows shell access and ftp (to upload and reboot the start/stop hosting), and allows you to run background processes (so the game will continue to run after you close the connection to the server).

A webserver (such as geocities) allows you to upload files that people can visit by going to the address. A server you need to host a game needs to be able to allow running programs. Using programs such as Putty, you can connect to the server and execute commands to start, stop or whatever else you may need to do to host a game. Background processes are needed so that when you close your connection to the server (when you close putty) the game server will continue to run in the background.

Why I'm Free:
Well, I'm no great host, but I try and keep virtually no lag. Untill I get the new computer, every other weekend, the server will probobly shut-down, and won't be back up untill Sunday-Monday. I go to my dad's house every other weekend, and my stupid brothers close the server. So, untill I get the new computer to host with, that only I will be able to use, there will be some down-time. Also, I only ask that you either put a paypal donate to Airjoe in either a verb in the game (see my demo) or on the game's hub entry or website =). The only reason I havn't really announced my hosting service is because of this problem.


Also:
I'd like to point out to people that dont understand this:
Donate basically means give something because you are generous, and don't get anything in return. I've noticed in Byond Boxing, that people say "What do I get if I donate???"

LOL.... can't they get a dictionary or somthing? To look for what the word actully means. I mean you dont get any thing if you donate, its just... Donating.
