Erg. So, you can use anyone appropriate octave. I say appropriate because you don't want it too low. I typically keep my chords above middle C (C4), and keep my melodies C5-C6.
For bass notes. If you want the chords to pop, take the bottom note from the chords (typically what I do), and place that down an octave.
These are some music sheets I made for solos for H.S. choir.

Hope this is helping. *Yawns*
Edit:
Another thing you shall know. You can also change the key of the scales.

I'll look more in to some music notes. I need to find out what each symbol means. Any other tips? |

So, what I am saying. It'll take practice, but probably not as long as it took me since there are people to give you answers! (I hated watching videos.) Ironic part is...I arranged some videos. All together 25 minutes long just for you, and I'll gladly post them on YouTube. Just to let you know, I am using LMMS since I didn't feel like digging FL Studio out of a box. And my laptop that has it keeps blue screening...So, I'll be a bit slow than normal. |

If Garage Band has the piano roll, just use Garage Band. I am not really giving a tutorial on LMMS because I suck at doing anything else on it but composing. It's not something I'd recommend. It's just free and similar to FL Studio. Super similar to the old FL Studio. When I was working with it, it was kind of like how LMMS is now with composing...FL Studio really improved.
I'd probably just find FL Studio and do the tutorial all over again. FL Studio is so much quicker and I am so used to it. I'll notify you when it's all uploaded to You Tube! |

famitracker is the best for writing 8-bit music Not making an 8 bit song. We already discussed this. every music writing program has a learning curve. Same thing goes with everything in life. there's absolutely nothing wrong with garage band for what you're doing. There is. I'm on an old version that came with the laptop the virtual instruments aren't all that pretty. Unless I have the capability of installing VSTs on Garage Band? if you don't want to learn to use a new program, then you shouldn't be making games at all This was never said. Nor implied. If you are referring to " I can feel like I'm going to have the hardest time learning the UI though..." that's because I'm aiming to put something out by the end of this week. Trust me, I've spent the time learning Unity3D, Gimp, Paint.NET, and tons of other programs for game development. Hell, I took the time to learn Garage Band, didn't I? Don't patronize me like I'm impatient or something. I just have deadlines I'm trying to meet to fulfill plans. *farts* All I'm saying is that I'm looking for something that is easier to use for the type of music I am looking to create. Based on hearing this wonderful peace, I think LMMS may just be something that turns me on. |

But, I understand what he means. I already understand the major scale. The question is, how does one apply it to making their own music? And am I bound to stay in 1 octave for a certain period of time or can I step out of that octave as much as I want?
