How to make Weapon/Armor and gem crafting

How would i make gem crafting where you mine ore and you work it but if you fail you lose the item you where working on and with the weapon how would i make it so you can create the stuff with other stuff but be expensive but useful so they would be for high level and would actually create the item

Okay Weapon crafting destroy the needed items and makes a weapon but expensive and gem crafting to make a fine gem and may loose item in the making
