i want an effect to play until all the frames of the effect have played then stop
is there a built in way to make something only flash until its done?

2) yes, flick(icon_state, target)
replace icon_state with "any icon state" and target with who will do the icon_state (note, you can use icons too, but make sure you use ' ' for icons
