Well, I myself don't use Beta, however I can always use it if required. I'm not a subscriber, and prefer playing the older version of BYOND.

Beta version. Why? Why not? I'd rather have one of the best games of BYOND compiled with the latest version, as that'd be more compitable with BYOND 4.0 when that will be released.
Only the thought of having one of the best games of BYOND being compitable the best with an much older version makes me think "wtf?" |
When it comes down to it, its preferable for game developers to use Beta while I believe it benefits more normal players to use 341.
My main argument against Beta is that you now can't use the byond seeker applet solely to find a game unless you're a member. Non members are forced to use both the ds applet and a internet window to find a online game. With 341, you just need to use the ds applet as the Byond Hub loads within the ds applet. I myself use Beta but only because certain games I want to play can only be played using Beta plus since I'm a member I don't have to deal with the nuisance I mentioned above...<Edited> While chatting this over with Sarm, he came up with what I thought was a good compromise, not sure if this is possible with byond coding or not: Cyberventurer (12:47:13 PM): How about you suggest that Silk make the server 341-compatible, but with checks when playing audio so that if the user is on the beta, he is sent the upgraded music instead. |
I would say beta is fine. I've only found the one bug where I open BYOND, and try to join a game, and whatever game I try to join it won't open. Thats happened to me a few times. But all I have to do is close it, then re-open it, so I say beta is a fine idea.

I don't get why the mentality here is that people shouldn't be using 3.41 anymore...It's the main version...the Beta is still just a test.
I like my DS to open when it's supposed to, I like to multi-key easily, I like the entirety of my BYOND folder to be all in one place, and I like to have my location displayed on the pager and HUB when I'm playing games compiled in 3.41. I don't really see what's wrong about that. |
I compiled in 341 last night just for kicks (I haven't compiled a 341 for awhile). Aside from having to change several pieces of code to get it to work, there were a bunch of little graphical glitches from bugs that haven't been fixed in 341.
Sooo... Beta it is. To answer your question, I can't make a compile that allows 341 users to play but also allows Beta users to have the benefit of the Beta improvements. Sorry! |
Man, I totally misread this title and thought you release a public Acheron's Beta. :[
I agree with Jaredoggy, to a point though. As far as DS not opening, all you have to do is close the pager and re-open it. Hopefully that'll be fixed in the next release. Multi-keying is a pain too, but since I've been making games as a team recently, we can test together and I don't need to multikey. I'm not sure what he's on about with "the entirety of my BYOND folder to be all in one place, and I like to have my location displayed on the pager and HUB". It took me a while to get used to the Beta, but I did. WHO MOVED MY CHEESE?! |
I'm not sure what he's on about with "the entirety of my BYOND folder to be all in one place, and I like to have my location displayed on the pager and HUB". Try to find your myhub folder in drive C and you'll know what I'm talking about. (unless you updated instead of installed it from scratch, and it doesn't change when you just update instead of doing a full install of the beta) And when I log into a game like DWO or Proelium and I'm the only one there, the game isn't listed as live because I'm not shown to even be on the game (not a problem I have with 3.41). That's cool with me if you compile with 3.5 though, I'm not completely adverse to using it. I just think that it's not a good idea to look down on people who prefer the stable version, which is kind of the mindset for a lot of folks who replied to this. |
Finding myhub folder isn't hard, simply because I know how many programs store stuff in Application Data these days.
C:\Documents and Settings\Joseph Dougherty\Application Data\BYOND\ That's all I can repeat off the top of my headfor certain, but I'm pretty sure myhub is just one more step from that. As far as the pager not showing you live, I'm pretty sure that's because with Beta 5 they tried to optimize that system so to speak. I could be entirely wrong on that though. |
I switched over to Beta the second my favorite game (at the time, I forget what one it even was now) required it... Never looked back, I miss the integrated hub a lot though.

Ive been using beta for a long time >> and if you are a byond member..I dont see why you wouldnt have beta.

I don't recall 100% but I'm pretty sure all recent versions before 3.5 were beta with 4.0 being the next true stable version. They just got renamed as stable so people could differentiate between the two. I don't agree with people looking down on those who don't use v3.5, but I do think it should be the standard version BYOND users are encouraged to use (especially with beta 6 released). I would consider it more stable than the pre-v3.5 versions. Try to find your myhub folder in drive C and you'll know what I'm talking about. That's actually something that makes BYOND much more stable. There are lots of problems with the old way of storing the myhub folders, although they only show up when you're using a non-administrator Windows profile. It's a pain but v3.5 does it the way it's meant to be done (or should I say the way Microsoft wants them to). =P If you really like the pre-beta versions instead of just sticking with it I'd suggest thinking up ways of bringing the features you like into the new versions. The pre-betas going to end up obsolete anyway, might as well start work on getting the features you want back in before that happens. |
I plan to release the next version of Murder Mansion as a 3.5 compile (well, since I'm already programming it with 3.5, I don't have much choice without rolling back my BYOND just to please some of the hold-outs)
The only problem I've really noticed from it is the "Dream Seeker sometimes won't open when trying to run a game" bug (which comes and goes, and seems to be fixed by shutting off the Pager, if it was left open from the last Compile-Run test)
