Since there's been a few talks about this game on the forums and blogs, I guess I'll talk a little about it.
This game is God. It was my first Gamecube game and I owned only this game until I bought Time Splitters 2 a few months later. Every day I played it for about 3 hours+ at a time.
These days I've not played it for a few years (except sporadically with friends round), so I've lost my 'touch'. I think everyone gets it after they play SSBM for long enough- you become like gifted- like Neo. You can see, instantly, from the moment a projectile is fired where it will land. You can see where a blow will hit and at what point you should sidestep. I play as Link and I could fall through the air, aim with the bow and hit someone falling in another direction on the other side of the stage with my eyes closed. You become acutely aware of the physics and timing and there's nothing you can't do- it becomes instinctive.
Now this is fairly good. To be at that level means you can pull your own weight in the game and beat a team of 3 people with 10 times as many lives as you. But hell- I've been checking out videos of people playing the game on google video (after checking out Pmac's video that Airjoe linked to then clicking some related stuff); these people are God-like. These people have powers that I could never have.
Wii, please have wifi for GC (and n64) multiplayer... I'm not sure how bad lag would effect a game of SSBM (I'm thinking it would have a pretty nasty impact, unfortunately :( ) but I would certainly like to fight some of those guys, at least once in my life. Even if I get instantly beaten I would simply want to see those guys move!
All eyes are now on Brawl- I hope they don't screw it up! Melee was one of the finest balanced games of it's time... that Mario super move looks impressive but those moves better not overshadow and cheapen the game.
*edit*
Also Dream Fountain, best level ever.

I pretty much agree with this post except corneria and hyrule temple are my favorites.
|
I used to be somewhat like that, but after reading this post, I checked some videos, and I realized "You know, I wasnt that good."
|
I've played Pmac probably over 150 times. I've won like 3 or 4 of those matches.
He is a God. |
I am masterful at SSBM, with Marth. I have those senses mentioned(I can see someone throwing an object, jump in its path, catch it mid-air, and use it against them quickly). Link's too slow for my tastes, and Young Link is just too...not good. :/ In the first SSB I was always using Link, though, but there weren't many others to choose from(if I wasn't Link, I would've been Pikachu or Fox).
I'm excited about Brawl because it has the online play(I think....doesn't it?). It's so hard to find a good group to play with these days; it would be awesome to have fellow SSB-ers in a lobby ready to get some action going at all hours of the night. It better have Marth. :/ (If you can't tell, I haven't looked into it too much, really. Too lazy. All I know is that it has Solid Snake in it, which is really strange, I think). |
I have a terrible confession to make.
I've probably played SSB:Melee with other people under 5 times ever. :( |
Heh, I remember a few summers ago I used to play with other people every day. I don't know, against people I like using Link, because I can combo pretty well. Sometimes i'll use donkey kong, falco, or yoshi, maybe pikachu since he's fast. Against computers it's roy or ganandorf because well.... computers are retarded and run at you while you can easily just smash them or use B. I don't really like marth, he's like roy but faster and weaker. i've recently discovered that sheik is a pretty deadly comboer, but he has no real power and you have to wear them down a lot before you can hit them off screen, meh.

Haha you guys dont know nothing yet.. no offence.. I have gone to tournaments and played against the pros... IF you wana be good u need to learn all the advanced Techniques... Such as... The WaveDash, L-Cancel, Short Hop, and there is MUCH MUCH more... I Mastered all of those moves.. If you have ne questions add me to MSN or AIM and ask me
AIM- KingOfShadowsX MSN- [email protected] |
No, if you wanna be a cheap idiot then you learn to wavedash, l-cancel, etcetera.
I play as Marth, Roy, Pikachu, or Samus, depending on mood. I'm best at Marth, who does have several things over Roy - most notably speed, which is pretty important. He's awesome at edge-guarding because of that killer forward smash. >:) Pikachu is just fun. Yay thunder! Roy is similar to Marth, so why not? And, of course, it's easier to hit hard with Roy because he doesn't have the same sorts of penalties for not getting the sweet spot (Marth and Roy actually hit about the same, but Marth's attacks aren't all that good unless you get someone with the tip of your sword, whereas Roy's don't suffer the same problems) And I used Samus in the original Smash Bros., and she rocks. Yay big blue ball of death! I'm a decent-ish player, I suppose. I've managed to get myself all the trophies/characters/stages (Excepting the trophies you need to gameshark in or win in one of those contests that never happened down here in PAL-land). Plus, I can finish Event Match 51 with someone that isn't Jigglypuff. :P |
i haven't gotten all the trophies yet, I am really close though, in the 280's, and I've beaten event match 51 with link, fox, jigglypuf, yoshi, and roy so far.

I never learnt those wave-dash moves and such. Never really thought them necessary and to be honest never really heard of them before! I never consulted the internets when I played so I guess I never found out about that kind of stuff.
What's better than a normal running dash at someone anyway? It's all about the psychology. You gotta *stare* 'em out. >:D Anyway, yeah. I've always been Link, ever since the first SSB on the 64... he's not the quickest character on the roster but I've never really felt a need for speed. He can handle pretty much any situation- whilst him and Samus share the same move-set (at least, it's similar) he is more balanced in his attacks (except that awesome diagonal down attack Samus has), unfortunately he's lacking the ballistic power of Samus' cannon though. Bombs, arrows and the boomerang are all mega-useful. A friend of mine plays as Sheik and he's frickin' fast... he's not a better player than me (in fact I'm far better ¬_¬) but the speed can take you by surprise sometimes. I just let my smash attack go a little earlier and let the speed do the work for me. =P |
Wave-dashing is where you make a tiny hop in the air, and then air-dodge diagonally into the ground. It makes you slide a bit.
Maybe it's because I haven't really played against someone who uses it, but I can't fathom how it would be useful in a match. People say that it lets you move forward while preparing a smash attack but I don't see why someone can't just jump out of the way if he sees it coming. |
Their reaction times during the game were incredible.
