There are hundreds if not thousands or more of ways to draw good icons. You can draw icons in photoshop or MSpaint(as a large icon or a 32x32), and import them to DM and they'll break up into multiple icon states.
Please don't call it "iconing", sounds kind of rude because icon making is art, which is why it's called pixel art or icon art.
