Just a theoretical question. I'm expecting 50+ people constantly. 50 is normal. However, all on one server, for something text-based (or image-based, like a puzzle) on a 3.7GHz CPU, how many players could a BYOND game hold? I'm talking a possible whopping 500 people.
I've never seen a byond game have more than 200 players on one server. I've seen games come close such as Dragon Ball Finale or GOA and from what I remember those games had a lot of lag. Who knows how many players you could have before they start to time out from lag, but I'd imagine for a text-based game you could probably hold more people. Less procs (or "cpu intensive procs") running and you wouldn't notice lag as much as other games.

Nff use to have. 220+ players last year with minimal lag but they did not have many npcs or ai

GOA has poor programming from the amount of sources I see that have issues. I'm programming with extreme efficiency in mind. I'm curious, if the game does nothing, what is the limit? I mean, if it's just a chat room. Just to get an idea on the ground limit. |
Im talking about 2013 and i never knew u were even related to NFF, before 2013 it never went past 200 lol

Hmm I am pretty sure in the period where there were 220+ players we split the application to lower the lag. He hosted off of two ports on the same server. Chat and what not were link and the game was playable.
There may have been a period when there was 220 on a single server but I dont believe that was very long. |

Who cares... 20 more players talk when ya gettin SS13 players! Well the point of the topic is how many players can be on a single server.. SS13 has multiple servers. |
Eternia can hold about 80-100 players on a server with relatively minimal lag. It's not the most optimized game on BYOND, and at times can get very laggy and choppy, but for the most part it's playable even at 100+ players.
I don't recommend cramming all your players on one server, however. |
On my Zeta rip Dragon Ball Z Return of Goku Revival Of The Black Star Dragon Bolls XVI I hold atleast 500 on a server. With minimal lag.

Tests it and find out :) I don't believe PC specs are the only issue here.
