I've tried using

M << output("Read it? [M.Quest]", "QuestOut2")

Where QuestOut2 is an output, and M.Quest is an object, but it never shows me the icon of the object, only its name. Trying M.Quest.icon gives the name of the icon file.

How can I get it to show what the object looks like? Thanks for any help!

\icon[M.Quest]

Look up the icon text macro.
