Hello, fellow BYOND community. I am here to post a shameless plug about my favorite BYOND game, Final Fantasy Online, by Gakumerasara.

Final Fantasy Online is a fan game based off of Final Fantasy 1, with many features that I don't see in other BYOND fan-games. The style of play is similar to that of Diablo II, and works perfectly. There are quests, bosses, a working town system where you can take over towns and have underlings join your fiefdom, and plenty of spells/skills for every playable class.

You can't go wrong with this game. The community is large and very involved with the game. Please take some time to try it out if/when you have the time.
I had problems with the game. Namely that I couldn't make out anything in the HUD in small mode, and it got cut off completely in big mode. I think it's stupid that I'd have to change my resolution just to play one Byond game. My character was just dumped into the game with what felt like no real goal or purpose, random battles were frustrating, and I felt punished for trying to explore.

I guess it's okay but the game was definitely not for me.
Nor for me.

Well, I suppose the main purpose of the game is to join a domain or make your own and be a part of a community. Often times, domains will war against each other (for various reasons, sometimes personal). The community is what makes the game enjoyable.

random battles were frustrating

The battle system is more balanced now (not sure when you played), and many new spells and skills were added. Partying is strongly recommended and eases the battles up a ton.

I felt punished for trying to explore

Not sure what you mean by this, or whether you were still referencing how frustrating random battles were for you. Many parties would love to explore the areas. Soloing is hard especially for some classes and isn't recommended (especially at low levels). Partying is the way to go.
I'm big on Wsay which the game doesn't really have. There's NewbieSay but you'd lose that once you left the island so the end result was that...I never left. And I don't see how mandatory roleplaying in regular Say really encourages anything, either. It was also annoying as hell that people's names would be masked until they actually said them. It may be more realistic but I don't play games for hyper-realism.

I should've clarified, sorry. My problem was that I would constantly trigger more random battles while trying to fight the ones already on my screen. Or if I did happen to kill them, even MORE would appear while I was trying to pick up items. There was really no end to it whenever I left the town walls.

I played the last time there was a public test, before "The Cube" was added. I swear, that sounded like such a stupid idea to me. Setting up a place to send PKers if they're caught, and setting up a way for them to get out with treasure sounds like it defeats the purpose of sending them anywhere to begin with. I don't know if it was changed since then but that's what was being tossed around last I heard.

Plus, I tried partying a few times and it sucked badly. It was more rewarding to just hug town walls and pick things off solo because I didn't have to worry about monster rushes that way. :/

Edit: I despise having to click to move around too.
Is this the one that has immense ammounts of lag?

I haven't noticed lag, or much lag. I think you're talking about FF: The Hunting Grounds.
Lag on FF: THG? Surely, you jest.

When the game had 30+ people playing, it would severely lag when players had to download resources. That was why they had a seperate pre-download -- so that new players could get the resources from there instead of lagging the server everytime they needed to get it.

Yeah, it was mostly because of those huge battle and ambush .wavs.
